About the Role

Our client, a forward-thinking technology firm specializing in data analytics for resource industries, is seeking a highly skilled Data Scientist to join their fully remote team. This pivotal role will involve leveraging advanced statistical techniques, machine learning algorithms, and data mining methods to extract actionable insights from complex datasets related to mining operations. You will be instrumental in developing predictive models, optimizing operational efficiencies, and driving strategic decision-making through data-driven narratives.

The ideal candidate possesses a strong quantitative background, exceptional programming skills, and a passion for solving challenging problems in a distributed environment. As a remote-first employee, you will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including geologists, engineers, and business analysts, using state-of-the-art collaboration tools. This position offers a unique opportunity to shape the future of data analytics in the mining sector, working on impactful projects without the constraints of a physical office.

We are looking for an individual who thrives on innovation and can independently contribute to groundbreaking data science initiatives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and implement machine learning models and algorithms to address business challenges.
  • Analyze large, complex datasets to identify trends, patterns, and insights relevant to mining operations.
  • Develop predictive models for equipment failure, production output, and resource grades.
  • Create data visualizations and dashboards to communicate findings effectively to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with domain experts to understand data sources and define analytical approaches.
  • Perform data wrangling, cleaning, and feature engineering to prepare data for modeling.
  • Stay current with the latest advancements in data science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of the company's data infrastructure and analytics platforms.
  • Document methodologies, models, and results thoroughly.
  • Participate in code reviews and contribute to the overall quality of the data science codebase.
Requirements
  • A Master's or PhD degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Data Science, or a related quantitative field.
  • 5+ years of professional experience in data science or a similar analytical role, preferably within or servicing the mining industry.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python (with libraries like Pandas, Num Py, Scikit-learn, Tensor Flow/PyTorch) and R.
  • Strong experience with SQL and working with relational databases.
  • Familiarity with big data technologies (e.g., Spark, Hadoop) and cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP).
  • Solid understanding of statistical modeling, machine learning algorithms, and experimental design.
  • Excellent problem-solving, critical thinking, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously in a remote setting.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Experience with data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI, Matplotlib, Seaborn).
Benefits
  • As a remote employee, you will receive a competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, retirement contributions, and generous paid time off.
  • Our client provides a stipend for home office setup and ongoing professional development opportunities, including access to online courses, workshops, and conferences.
  • Join a collaborative and innovative remote team where your expertise in data science will directly contribute to optimizing critical industries and driving technological advancements.
  • This role offers significant autonomy and the chance to grow your career in a flexible, home-based environment.
