The Excess Liability Division specializes in offering large limits of liability to protect clients’ corporate assets from catastrophic loss. It provides up to $20 million in limits for both Lead Umbrella and Excess Liability placements, covering a wide range of client types.

We are seeking a Divisional Assistant Vice President (AVP) or Vice President (VP) of Underwriting to join our team. This individual will manage technical underwriting, pricing, and coverage issues for P&C insurance and reinsurance in the home office.
They provide leadership in cross‑functional teams, ensuring high‑quality underwriting, adequate pricing, innovative product development, sound business processes, and regulatory compliance.
Ideal candidates bring a strong background in insurance/reinsurance liability underwriting and are responsible for handling underwriting referrals, ensuring SOX compliance, conducting audits, and overseeing field underwriters and managers.
This role may be based in the Excess Liability Division’s Home Office in Marietta, GA or at Great American’s headquarters in Cincinnati, OH.
Key Responsibilities- Act as a resource for field offices with technical underwriting issues.
- Manage and process referrals, providing clear approval or denial with documentation.
- Provide advice and guidance to the field to achieve business objectives.
- Work closely with Divisional President and Vice President on strategic objectives related to underwriting duties.
- Ensure compliance with SOX regulations and conduct regular audits.
- Maintain detailed understanding of underwriting guidelines and product knowledge, guiding the team.
- Act as key point of contact for regulatory and policy compliance, ensuring all activities meet legal and internal standards.
- Travel less than 10% for audits and client meetings.
- Bachelor’s degree in Insurance, Finance, Business Administration, or related field.
- 10+ years of liability underwriting experience, exposure to reinsurance and referral processes.
- Strong analytical skills to assess complex risks and develop sound underwriting strategies.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, building relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
