Job Summary

This position supervises adjusters and directly handles claims within Ryder's self-insured, self-administered liability program. Oversees claim-handling processes performed by a professional staff and handles complex insurance and contractual coverage issues, including high exposure bodily injury and property damage claims. Maintains an active inventory of claims, ensuring appropriate follow-up, timely resolution, and adherence to service standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Investigate and resolve complex and high exposure claims, directing outside defense counsel, independent adjusters, experts, and other vendors.
  • Supervise outside vendors retained for investigations, cost containment, expert witnesses, and litigation management to ensure claims are handled properly according to applicable jurisdictions.
  • Supervise assigned staff to ensure both technical expertise and a high level of customer service are attained. Monitor staff's technical work, develop and implement action plans if deficiencies are noted, and monitor staff's workflow to ensure accurate processing of claims.
  • Conduct coaching, education, audits, file reviews, and performance appraisals of assigned staff. Assist Claim Manager with other staff as directed.
  • Participate in large claim review calls and update field operations personnel on claim status.
  • Possess a comprehensive understanding of relevant laws and regulations governing Property and Casualty claims in the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico, and work directly with various State Departments of Insurance on inquiries and complaints.
  • Review reserves and trends on individual cases, recommend and set timely and accurate reserves based on documented file developments, and ensure the most appropriate resolution of all claims is reached while maintaining a high level of customer service.
Additional Responsibilities

Perform other duties as assigned. Primary backup for the Claim Manager, assisting as directed with claim assignments, reviewing and tracking lawsuits and authorizing use of defense counsel.

Education

Bachelor's degree in business or a related field.

Experience

Seven (7) years or more experience in casualty claims, litigation, and handling large complex cases. One (1) year of supervisory experience preferred.

Knowledge & Competencies
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise 2‑4 liability claims staff, conduct audits and performance appraisals; intermediate level preferred.
  • Knowledge of supervisory techniques and interpersonal skills; intermediate level preferred.
  • Comprehensive understanding of relevant laws and regulations governing Property and Casualty claims in the U.S., Canada & Puerto Rico; advanced level.
  • Ability to handle large exposure and complex insurance and contractual coverage exposure claims; advanced level.
  • Experience completing detailed and quality internal reports; advanced level.
  • Experience participating in mediation and arbitration; advanced level.
Licenses

Other Adjusters License preferred. Appropriate licenses must be obtained within 45 days.
