Underwriting Supervisor

Charlotte, NC (Hybrid) Full-Time Presented by The James Allen Companies Inc.

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced Underwriting Supervisor to lead and oversee the underwriting operations of a branch office. This role is responsible for managing day-to-day underwriting activities, ensuring compliance with internal policies and regulatory requirements, and providing coaching and support to a team of underwriters. The right candidate will combine strong technical expertise with proven leadership ability to drive performance, deliver profitable results, and foster a culture of continuous improvement.

Primary

Responsibilities
  • Supervise underwriting staff, ensuring the quality, timeliness, and accuracy of work.

  • Provide training, feedback, and performance evaluations to team members.

  • Underwrite or assist with large, complex, or unusual risks requiring advanced technical knowledge.

  • Conduct underwriting file reviews to ensure compliance and accuracy.

  • Support branch leadership with projects and initiatives as needed.

  • Evaluate, quote, and negotiate policies for new and renewal business, with expertise in statutory requirements, ISO, NCCI, and industry guidelines.

  • Make independent underwriting decisions, including policy acceptance, modification, or declination, while monitoring exposure changes throughout policy periods.

  • Manage a portfolio of agencies, including prospecting, appointment, development, and profit-sharing opportunities
    .

  • Travel as required for agency visits, client meetings, and territory management.

  • Drive new business development while retaining renewal business through effective presentations and client engagement
    .

  • Achieve profitable underwriting results within an assigned territory, including premium growth, loss ratio targets, and business forecasting.

  • Maintain strong agency relationships through regular communication, reviews, and performance evaluations.

  • Collaborate with claims, risk control, and premium audit services to support customer needs.

  • Provide leadership and serve as a technical resource within the underwriting team.

  • Stay current on corporate, regulatory, and competitive changes impacting lines of business.

  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Insurance, Risk Management, or related field (or equivalent experience).

  • Minimum 5–7 years of commercial underwriting experience
    , including:

    • Field underwriting in Construction, Forest Products, Manufacturing, and Oil & Gas
      .

    • Evaluating new and renewal business, setting pricing, and understanding commercial policy forms.

    • Exposure analysis and risk management throughout policy periods.

    • Agency management, including growth, appointment, and retention strategies.

  • External sales experience with a proven ability to cultivate new business and retain current clients.

  • Eligible to work in the United States.

  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable motor vehicle record.

Preferred:

  • Prior supervisory or leadership experience in an underwriting environment.

Work Environment &

Physical Requirements
  • Hybrid office environment with flexibility for remote work as directed by management.

  • Ability to work effectively both in-person and virtually
    .

  • Overnight travel required.

  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 15 lbs and perform standard office mobility functions.
