Job Overview

The Large Loss Claims Adjuster plays a key role in delivering exceptional and consistent claims experience through fair and equitable handling of complex, large‑loss property claims. This position interprets and explains policy coverage, maintains accurate claim documentation, and manages claims efficiently from initial report to resolution. The role ensures timely service and clear communication throughout the claims process.

Job Responsibilities
  • Provide direction and support to members throughout the claims process, delivering exceptional service with empathy.
  • Ensure timely and proactive communication through voice, digital and written correspondence, addressing inquiries professionally and promptly.
  • Adjust complex and large‑loss property claims.
  • Review and interpret policy wordings, determine coverage, and communicate decisions to members.
  • Establish timely and accurate loss and expense reserves throughout the claim life cycle, evaluating and reconciling information from sources such as appraisers, independent adjusters and contractors.
  • Conduct comprehensive investigations to determine coverages and liability, adhering to Wawanesa’s adjusting guidelines and engaging appropriate internal and external resources when needed; collect evidence to support recovery efforts.
  • Coordinate and manage services with vendors and service providers (appraisers, independent adjusters, contractors).
  • Negotiate and convey claim settlements within authority limits; communicate decisions promptly while delivering exceptional member experience.
  • Maintain an effective diary system and document claim file activities per established procedures.
  • Demonstrate and maintain extensive knowledge of policy coverages, complying with regional regulatory and licensing requirements; stay current with legislative changes and industry trends.
  • Show proficiency in reviewing repair estimates, creating narrative scopes, and generating advanced level estimates using an estimating software system.
  • Provide ongoing technical advice, guidance, peer coaching and mentoring to claims staff.
  • Support CAT plan as needed, including assisting on claims outside the service area.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • 3+ years’ experience in residential insurance; commercial and farm insurance experience is a strong asset.
  • Experience with databases and insurance technology, including AI.
  • Experience interpreting and quantifying property damage estimates.
  • Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP), or working toward designation; required designations considered an asset.
  • Exceptional customer‑service skills demonstrating empathy and concern for member satisfaction.
  • 2+ years of insurance adjusting or equivalent experience.
  • Post‑secondary degree preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills, including tailoring messages to different audiences.
  • Excellent time‑management and organizational skills with the ability to prioritize in a fast‑paced, changing environment.
