At Equitable, we believe great things happen when we work together. We’re a Canadian mutual company driven by purpose – putting people first and helping Canadians protect today and prepare for tomorrow. If you’re passionate about making a difference and growing your career in an inclusive, collaborative environment, we’d love to hear from you. Our culture is built on care, passion and curiosity.

Work

Arrangements

You will work from your home office 100% of the time. You may be required to be in-person at our office in Waterloo, ON or another assigned location within the Waterloo Region on an as‑needed basis. Sales related roles may be required to travel based on the assignment.

What you’ll do
  • Assess mortality and financial risk for individual life insurance applications through detailed analysis of medical, lifestyle, and financial information.
  • Collaborate with reinsurance partners to appropriately distribute risk for cases exceeding retention limits.
  • Coach and mentor junior, intermediate and/or senior underwriters from a technical perspective to ensure underwriting decisions are well‑reasoned, timely, and effectively communicated to stakeholders.
  • Demonstrate strong negotiation skills when working with reinsurers, advisors, and internal partners to achieve optimal underwriting outcomes.
  • Actively contribute as a team member and lead assigned projects, supporting continuous improvement and operational excellence.
What you’ll bring
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills supported by sound medical knowledge.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with strong product knowledge and the ability to effectively share expertise with others in a collaborative team environment.
  • A proactive, service‑oriented, and results‑focused approach.
  • Ability to deliver accurate and timely underwriting decisions, ensuring prompt responses to agents and brokers.
  • Strong underwriting customer‑service skills, recognizing that inaccurate or unclear communication can cause policy issuance delays and negatively impact agent confidence and business relationships.
  • Experience consulting with the Medical Director and reinsurers on complex or unusual medical risks, ensuring the company’s risk exposure remains appropriate.
  • Commitment to professional development—both self‑development and development of peers—through seminars, conferences, industry publications, and formal education.
  • FLMI or FALU designation, or active progress toward one of these designations.
  • Consistent accountability for quality and volume of work, demonstrated through positive audit results.
  • Completion of a minimum of 25 hours per year of continuing education to stay current with medical knowledge and industry underwriting trends.
What’s in it for you
  • Career Growth:
Regular learning sessions and development opportunities.
  • Total Rewards:
Incentive pay, annual salary reviews, employer‑paid benefits and pension matching.
  • Time Away:
Competitive vacation plus one paid volunteer day each year.
  • Flexibility:
Healthy work‑life balance with employee wellness always top of mind, complemented by a “dress for your day” approach.

Your base pay will be based on your skills, qualifications, experience and education. This role is eligible for a discretionary annual incentive award tied to business performance, along with a wide range of competitive benefits.
