This is a full-time position for an Assistant Underwriter within the Cargo team but working closely alongside the Logistics & Transportation and other Marine classes.
The role is based in the City of London, with flexibility to work from home on designated days. As an Assistant Underwriter, you will provide day-to-day support to the underwriting team by reviewing submissions, gathering and analysing information, preparing documentation, and assisting with the underwriting of (re) insurance risks across relevant lines of business. You will work closely with underwriters, brokers and internal stakeholders to help ensure risks are assessed accurately, records are maintained, and underwriting processes are completed efficiently and in line with company standards, collaborating to optimise output and service levels.
JobSpecification
- Review insurance applications and submissions to check completeness, accuracy and suitability for underwriting consideration
- Gather and analyse relevant information, including client profile, exposure, coverage requirements, claims history, market conditions and other risk factors, to support underwriting assessment
- Assist underwriters with preparing quotes, referrals, renewal reviews and supporting documentation in line with company guidelines and delegated authority processes
- Liaise with the exposure management team to ensure risk aggregation is accurately monitored and natural catastrophe exposures are captured and modelled
- Support the preparation of policy terms, conditions, coverage limits and premiums, ensuring information is accurate and ready for review
- Hold and exercise underwriting authority in accordance with agreed limits, company guidelines and delegated authority procedures
- Liaise with brokers and internal teams to request additional information, respond to routine queries and support the smooth progression of new business and renewal activity
- Maintain accurate records, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, internal procedures and underwriting standards
- Good understanding of underwriting principles, insurance products and risk assessment processes, with a willingness to continue developing technical knowledge
- Ability to review and interpret underwriting information, including submissions, claims history, exposure data and policy documentation
- Confident numerical and analytical skills, with the ability to work accurately with data, pricing information and underwriting tools
- Strong attention to detail, ensuring accuracy in documentation, data entry, policy wording and risk information
- Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to liaise professionally with brokers, clients and colleagues
- Good organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines and support underwriters with competing priorities
- Progress towards, or willingness to work towards, relevant insurance qualifications would be advantageous
- Proactive and solutions-focused mindset, with the ability to apply practical judgement and a common-sense approach to problem-solving
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build effective relationships with brokers, clients and colleagues
- Sound judgement and willingness to seek guidance when assessing complex or unfamiliar risk information
