Job Description SummaryThe Unconventional (TU) is seeking a qualified Montenegrin Translator to support the Department of Justice (DOJ) with Translation, Interpretation, Transcription and other Linguistic Support Services (LSS). This work includes translating written and electronic documents, video and audio media (e.g., compact discs, .wav files), and providing ancillary services such as court and deposition interpretation. Source material will cover legal, business, public administrative, medical, scientific, financial, historical, geographical and military terminology, as well as technology-related concepts in the sciences.
The translator will handle legal, highly technical, and informal texts, ranging from medical and autopsy reports to cryptocurrency transaction records, warrants, treaties, and sensitive law‑enforcement communications. All materials are deemed sensitive and require strict confidentiality and security controls.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of two (2) years of translation experience.
- Qualifying scores ILR 3 minimum or equivalent on language/translation tests.
- Must have lived for 3 of the last 5 years in the U.S. (not necessarily consecutive).
- Must have at least 1 year of experience with a law‑enforcement and/or legal department.
- Must be a U.S. citizen.
- Know both English and Montenegrin vocabularies—including formal, legal, diplomatic, consultative, casual, slang, idiosyncratic, and regionalisms.
- Know specialized vocabulary in both languages related to governmental missions, and possess research and analytical skills for critical terminology judgments.
- Write natively in Montenegrin and hold professional command of English.
- Produce translations that are factually and conceptually accurate, with no added‑or‑omitted details.
- Preserve tone and register of source materials.
- Adhere to relevant code of linguist ethics.
- Proficient in Computer‑Assisted Translation (CAT) tools, especially SDL Trados Studio.
Active Public Trust or higher security clearance required.
