Organizational Context

The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority. The Secretariat of the Basel, Rotterdam, and Stockholm Conventions (BRS Secretariat) manages three multilateral environmental agreements. This role supports the BRS Secretariat's clearing-house mechanism by translating the Rotterdam Convention website into UN languages.

Job Purpose

This role serves to review and enhance the Russian translation of the Rotterdam Convention website, which was initially translated using artificial intelligence. The primary objective is to ensure accuracy, adherence to official terminology, and maintain consistency with United Nations and UNEP standards. The contractor will identify and correct translation errors, focusing on those impacting meaning or related to legal, scientific, and technical terms.

The ultimate goal is to produce a high-quality, revised Russian version of the website content, contributing to effective information exchange and accessibility for Russian-speaking stakeholders.

Responsibilities

The Individual Contractor will edit the Russian translation of the Rotterdam Convention website, providing a revised MS Word document with track changes. This involves reviewing approximately 4,957 words of English source text and its automatic Russian translation. The contractor must ensure the revised translation accurately reflects official Rotterdam Convention terminology, as found in the Convention Text and Conference of the Parties reports.

Comments should be added to highlight mistranslated words or phrases. The focus will be on errors affecting meaning or specific legal, scientific, and technical terms. Maintaining United Nations and UNEP terminology and ensuring vocabulary consistency are crucial. The contractor is responsible for verifying terminology and quotation accuracy, and must seek clarification from the Information Systems Officer for any text ambiguity.

Work

Experience

A minimum of five years of experience in Russian editing within the UN or similar intergovernmental organizations is required. Three years of experience translating or editing documents from English to Russian for the UN, an international tribunal, or an organization dealing with legal matters is desirable. Experience with environment-related intergovernmental organizations in Russian is also desirable.

Skills

Fluency in English and Russian is required. Proficiency in another UN official language is desirable. Strong editing and translation skills, particularly in legal, scientific, and technical terminology. Familiarity with UN and UNEP terminology and style guides. Ability to work independently and meet deadlines. Excellent attention to detail.
