Overview

Litigated Claims Manager | Assistant General Counsel | Hybrid role  position is hybrid in Sacramento, with 2 days in the Sedgwick office and 3 days working from home. Approximately 5% travel may be required for in-person board meetings in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Key Responsibilities
  • acts as the pool client representative and oversees the pool’s liability program
  • analyze inquiries and provide guidance on memorandums of coverage, risk transfer, litigation strategy, and related issues
  • review member contracts submitted to pool administration and prepare presentations for meetings or strategic planning
  • attend member meetings, address concerns involving members, the TPA, or case development
  • provide training materials and coordinate with the pool administrator on cases, claims, and messaging
  • oversee the pool’s liability program and represent the pool in liability matters by participating in litigation proceedings
  • prepare claim processing instructions for TPA, revise policies as necessary, conduct quarterly file reviews with TPA, and provide feedback on claim handling
  • review TPA recommendations on government claim actions and monitor TPA for contractual obligations and MOC reviews
  • review monthly financial and litigation reports from TPA and participate in annual defense panel reviews
  • attend pool committee, board, and governance meetings related to claims, litigation, and MOC
  • ensure application of management principles to the litigation process and the use of outside counsel
  • manage early assignment of defense counsel to high-exposure incidents and coordinate strategy with members, TPA, reinsurers, excess carriers, and defense counsel
  • review information to evaluate cases, including police and investigation reports; communicate with defense counsel and prepare strategy communications
  • review pleadings and discovery, assess tools for valuation, and determine course of action for case disposition
  • manage the pool’s litigation and prelitigation matters; review litigation budgets and reserves
  • present case-specific information to applicable committees or boards to obtain settlement authority or provide strategic direction
Qualifications

Education & Licensing A Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited college or university is required. Current license(s) to practice law in the pool’s jurisdiction or jurisdictions.

Experience Eight (8) years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.

Skills & Knowledge
  • Knowledge of the litigation and trial process in the pool’s jurisdiction
  • Working knowledge of discovery, evidentiary rules, and civil procedure
  • Ability to assess counsel performance at trial
  • Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and PC literacy
  • Analytical, interpretive, and strong organizational skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and negotiating skills
  • Ability to produce comprehensive, accurate written reports and work well in a team
