The Wisconsin Department of Justice seeks talented individuals to join our Division of Legal Services as an Assistant Attorney General in the Civil Litigation Unit with a focus on Employment Law. This posting may fill multiple vacancies.
Position SummaryUnder general supervision of an Assistant Attorney General Supervisor, you will provide legal services through counsel and representation to the Legislature, Governor, state agencies, corporate counsel, and district attorneys. The Civil Litigation Unit handles a wide variety of matters, including civil rights, workers compensation, eminent domain, medical malpractice, personal injury, public records, employment, and administrative law. Attorneys collaborate with paralegals, support staff, other Assistant Attorneys General, and clients.
Responsibilities- Conduct in‑depth legal research and analyze statutes and case law.
- Draft judicial decisions or briefs as the primary drafter.
- Advocate orally in any court or present legal material.
- Serve as counsel in employment discrimination matters in state or federal trial court.
- Draft responses to agency charges of employment discrimination.
- Work with discovery and pre‑trial tasks, including document review, written discovery, depositions, and witness preparation.
- Draft summary judgment and other merit filings on employment discrimination matters.
- Serve as lead counsel in jury or bench trials.
- Member in good standing with the Wisconsin State Bar upon appointment.
- Education, training and/or experience in conducting legal research, analyzing statutes and case law, writing judicial decisions, oral advocacy, and employment discrimination counsel.
- Well‑qualified applicants will have experience drafting agency responses, discovery tasks, merit filings, and trial leadership.
Pay schedule 09, range 75. Starting pay $36.72–$56.37/hour (approx. $76,377–$117,249 annually). Pay for current or former state employees follows the Wisconsin Compensation Plan. A 12‑month probationary period may be required.
Job DetailsHybrid schedule: up to 95% remote after an initial training period. Remote work requires high‑speed internet access. Occasional in‑state travel may be required; must be eligible to drive. The Department of Justice does not sponsor work visas. All hires verify identity and eligibility to work in the U.S. and complete Form I‑9. A background check, including fingerprints, precedes selection.
