Position: Assistant Attorney General (Government Services Section)

Assistant Attorney General (Government Services Section)

The U.S. Department of Justice – General Counsel Division, Government Services Section seeks up to two full‑time attorneys to join a team of twelve accomplished attorneys. The position is primarily located in Salem, Oregon, but offers hybrid remote work options.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide legal counsel, guidance, and training to the Oregon State Police, Oregon Department of Corrections, and other state agencies.
  • Develop deep subject‑matter expertise in Oregon policing and corrections.
  • Litigate administrative hearings and assist with rule makings.
  • Advise clients on complex state and federal statutory and constitutional law.
  • Handle public records and public meetings laws, and subpoena responses.
  • Deliver effective staff trainings and other duties as assigned by management.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Active membership in good standing with the Oregon State Bar at the time of appointment.
  • At least one year of experience advising or litigating on behalf of governments in Oregon or elsewhere.
  • Strong drafting, research, and communication skills.
  • Ability to handle a full workload and collaborate effectively within a team.
  • Ability to present complex issues in plain language.
  • Strong work ethic and commitment to public service.
  • Willingness to travel within Oregon as needed and to take client calls outside normal hours.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Preferred Experience
  • At least three years in a general counsel role for an Oregon government, with samples of written client advice.
  • At least two years advising, training, and working with policing or corrections clients.
  • At least three years drafting ordinances, statutes, rules, policies, and procedures with samples.
  • Experience litigating administrative hearing matters.
  • Demonstrated skill in summarizing complex legal issues in plain language with samples.
  • At least two years working with Oregon’s public records law or subpoena review and response.
Benefits

Competitive salary ($8,842 – $17,168 per month) and a comprehensive benefits package, including PERS participation for eligible employees.
