Summary
The United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Maine is seeking an experienced Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) for its Civil Division. The position is located in Portland, Maine. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or nationals.

Assistant United States Attorneys litigate on behalf of the federal government in a wide variety of civil matters, including:
- Immigration‑based habeas corpus claims
- Medical malpractice, personal injury, and employment discrimination cases
- Constitutional claims against federal officials
- Bankruptcy, collection, and foreclosure proceedings
- Health‑care fraud, procurement fraud, and challenges to federal agency actions
- Subpoena and summons enforcement litigation
Assigned cases will include matters pending in U.S. District Court, U.S. Bankruptcy Court, in Portland and Bangor. Responsibilities will grow with training and experience.
Requirements- U.S. citizenship or national
- Registration for Selective Service (if applicable)
- J.D. degree and active membership in a U.S. bar
- Must reside in the District or within 25 miles
- Background investigation, fingerprint, credit and tax checks, drug testing
- Probationary period of 2 years with written certification for continued employment
- Minimum of three years of post‑J.D. experience
- Demonstrated excellence in trial advocacy and legal writing
- At least five years of post‑J.D. experience
- At least three years of federal civil litigation experience, preferably in a U.S. Attorney’s Office, DOJ litigation component, or a state attorney general’s office
- Strong analytical ability and clear articulation of critical issues
- Superior oral and written communication skills and courtroom presence
- Commitment to professionalism, ethics, civility, and public service
- Impeccable integrity
- Excellent organizational, time‑management, and interpersonal skills
- Computer literacy for electronic discovery and litigation
- Desire to practice in Maine
