Position Description
Legal Aid Services of Oregon (LASO) is seeking a full-time Staff Attorney for its Salem Regional Office. This position is eligible for a partial remote work option.
BackgroundLASO is a non‑profit organization that represents low‑income clients in civil cases. Its eight regional offices serve the general low‑income population throughout Oregon, and it operates two specialized statewide programs focused on services to farm workers and on issues impacting Native Americans. LASO is an effective, high‑quality legal services program committed to advocacy strategies that have the broadest possible impact on client community problems.
The Salem office serves the civil legal needs of low‑income residents in Marion and Polk counties.
The staff attorney will maintain a varied poverty‑law caseload focused on housing, family law, and administrative law matters, and other substantive areas as assigned by the Regional Director. Duties include all aspects of legal representation: client contact, pleading preparation, research, file maintenance, working with support staff, and hearing and trial work.
QualificationsFive or more years of legal experience, membership in the Oregon State Bar, and substantial litigation experience are required. Experience appearing in administrative law hearings is a plus. Candidates should have a proven interest in and commitment to advocacy for the legal rights of low‑income and other vulnerable populations, enthusiasm, creativity, good judgment, initiative, and willingness to work collaboratively. Demonstrated understanding and commitment to anti‑bias principles, cultural competency, and addressing systemic racism and other forms of oppression are expected.
LASO has a hiring preference for candidates bilingual in Spanish and/or another language spoken by its client population; however, bilingualism is not a requirement.
Compensation is based on a 35‑hour work week. Salary ranges from $73,700 to $81,200 for 5–10 years’ experience and from $82,700 to $105,200 for 11–30 years’ experience annually, determined by relevant experience and the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Additional $4,300 to $5,700 annually may be added for bilingual ability, depending on proficiency. The full benefits package includes individual and family health, vision, and dental insurance;
a 6% employer retirement contribution; generous paid holidays, vacation, and sick leave; and paid moving expenses.
