The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) manages the efficient flow of electricity on more than 11,000 circuit‑miles of high‑voltage transmission lines, dispatching power from hundreds of generating units across the state.

The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) applies cutting‑edge technology to operating a reliable electricity system, managing competitive markets for wholesale electricity, and planning for the Empire State's energy future. The NYISO's Legal department invites applications for a full‑time Senior Compliance Attorney.

The Senior Compliance Attorney oversees all day‑to‑day facets of NYISO corporate compliance program and coordinates all major activities of the compliance team. The Compliance Attorney has substantive expertise in each of NYISO's major compliance areas including FERC, NERC, NPCC, IRS, NYSRC, NAESB, and DOL. This position reports directly to the EVP, General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Review and enhance on an on‑going basis NYISO's compliance policies, processes and controls.
  • Represent NYISO in compliance‑related legal and regulatory proceedings including audits, investigations, and evidentiary hearings and assist in standards development and rule makings.
  • Develop annual Board, management and employee compliance and code of conduct training program.
  • Resolve Code of Conduct issues arising under NYISO tariffs and handle CEII and other confidentiality matters.
  • Oversee compliance tracking system, tariff‑based "Market Problem" reporting process, and company‑wide annual compliance attestation process.
  • Assist Chief Compliance Officer in leading inter‑departmental compliance team and prepare Board presentations addressing compliance matters.
  • Assist General Counsel with whistle blower program.
  • Develop substantive expertise on NERC, NPCC, NYSRC, NAESB, confidentiality, CEII, FERC, IRS, DOL and other significant compliance related laws and rules.
  • Represent the NYISO at NYSRC meetings.
  • Oversee and be responsible for corporate insurance requirements.
  • Participate in NYISO stakeholder governance processes, as necessary.
  • Monitor new or proposed legislation and analyze organizational compliance obligations.
  • Oversee litigation and document holds and coordinate with records retention group.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Juris Doctorate (J.D.) from accredited law school. Excellent academic credentials required.
  • A minimum of eight years of related experience practicing before FERC or other state regulatory commissions on energy and/or compliance matters.
  • Experience at an ISO, public utility, energy marketing company or a legal position at the Public Service Commission (PSC); or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

License to practice law required. Admission to Bar in New York and the District of Columbia desired.

The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds. ENVIRONMENT

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Contact with staff and public will occur. Travel may be required to attend and/or conduct meetings, conferences and training. This position may require work on nights, weekends or holidays.

In this role, you will be required to work onsite from our Rensselaer, NY location several days per workweek, with the option to work remotely on the remaining days.
