Position: Investigator (EEO)

The Utah Labor Commission is looking for a team player with excellent communication and legal writing skills to fill an Employment and Housing Discrimination Investigator position with the Utah Antidiscrimination and Labor Division (UALD).

This is a hybrid position offering in-person and telework opportunities for State of Utah residents. Full-time in-office work is required prior to remote opportunities being available. In order to work from home, the successful candidate will need to have WIFI access in their home and complete all work within the state of Utah.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES

As a neutral fact-finder you will investigate and resolve employment and housing discrimination complaints and claims of unpaid wages. This position requires that you perform difficult and sensitive investigations of claims of employment and housing discrimination, make determinations on claims of unpaid wages, and have a thorough understanding of the relevant law. You will need to complete each case with a written report of the findings and analysis and submit for review within a timely manner.

The principal duties will include:

  • Conducting investigations into complaints of employment and housing discrimination and harassment, denial of reasonable accommodation, and unlawful retaliatory actions.
  • Hearing and making determinations on claims of unpaid wages.
  • Conducting fact-finding conferences and occasional on-site inspections.
  • Interviewing relevant parties, including witnesses, co-workers, managers, housing providers, etc.
  • Reviewing relevant documents submitted by the parties.
  • Drafting documents related to the investigation.
  • Preparing documents consisting of concise decisions based upon facts, interpretations of law, and compliance with state and federal standards.
  • Receiving, researching, and responding to incoming questions or complaints.
  • Providing information, explaining policy and procedures, and/or facilitating a resolution.
  • Delivering presentations, or instruction to staff, management, or the general public.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • A Juris Doctor (JD) or equivalent training and experience (examples:
    Paralegal Certificate or a Masters of Legal Studies (MLS) degree plus previous law office experience working on legal matters including applying the law to specific facts, analyzing legal claims, and reviewing documents to determine relevant legal information).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and/or Google Docs.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Prior EEO investigative experience.
  • Experience with fair housing, employment discrimination (EEO), or wage laws.
  • Prior legal and/or investigative experience:
    • Collecting, reviewing, and analyzing evidence
    • Interviewing witnesses and/or parties
    • Performing legal research
    • Managing a caseload and meeting deadlines
    • Drafting decisions, motions, and/or memoranda
