Job Description

We are fully committed to having an inclusive workforce that reflects the communities we serve. We welcome applications from people of all backgrounds and experiences and recognise the value that different perspectives bring to our work.

The Environment Agency offers lawyers a unique opportunity to work on property matters that help protect people and the environment. From nationally significant flood defence schemes to commercial property transactions, biodiversity initiatives and sustainable land management projects, our work has a real impact on communities across England.

This is an excellent opportunity for a junior lawyer to develop their career within a supportive legal team. You will manage your own caseload while receiving guidance and mentoring from experienced lawyers.

Our Property Law Team provides specialist advice on a wide range of work, including land acquisition and disposal, commercial property matters, strategic infrastructure projects, biodiversity net gain, and the Environment Agency's Land Strategy. The work typically includes title investigations, drafting and negotiating leases, licences, easements, transfers and other property documents necessary for the Environment Agency to deliver its statutory functions.

You'll work across the Property Law Team, supporting colleagues on a broad range of matters and helping to deliver key national projects. Responsibilities may include acquisitions and disposals of freehold and leasehold interests, commercial landlord and tenant work, management of the Environment Agency's property assets and agricultural land matters.

We recognise that excellent lawyers come from a variety of backgrounds. We welcome applications from candidates with property law experience, as well as those with transferable skills gained in other legal disciplines who are looking to develop their property law expertise.

The role is full-time (37 hours per week), although we welcome applications from candidates seeking flexible working arrangements, including part-time working and job share opportunities. Please set out any preferred working arrangements in your application.

The team

The Property Law Team consists of 14 lawyers, 2 paralegals and 3 Team Leaders and forms part of the Legal and Audit Services team.

We are a friendly, collaborative and supportive team committed to helping colleagues develop and succeed. Everyone joining the team receives training, mentoring and ongoing support to build their skills and confidence.

Together, we provide high-quality legal advice that helps the Environment Agency deliver important operational and environmental outcomes across England.

Experience/skills Required

You'll be a qualified solicitor, barrister or Chartered Legal Executive with current rights to practice law in England and Wales.

We welcome applications from lawyers at the early stages of their careers and from those with more experience who are looking for a new challenge.

You’ll need to demonstrate:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Good organisational and case management abilities.
  • The ability to build effective working relationships with clients and colleagues.
  • Sound legal judgement, with good attention to detail and a willingness to learn and develop.
  • Thrive on challenge and prioritise well which will enable you to manage your own caseload effectively.

Experience in commercial property, property litigation or public sector property work would be beneficial but is not essential. We value potential and transferable skills, and we will provide support and training to help you succeed in the role.

Contact and additional information

As with all roles in Legal Services, we combine home working with attendance at the contractual office base, subject to meeting business needs. The roles can be based at any of our main hub locations. There will be travel to other locations as required.

Interviews are expected to take place in mid to late September.

We are committed to having an inclusive workforce to reflect the diverse communities we serve.
