Summary
A Law firm is hiring a Paralegal / Legal Assistant (Japanese speaking) to work alongside our lawyers in response to the increasing number of cross-border matters involving Japan, Singapore, and other Asian jurisdictions. A legal qualification is not required.
Candidates with experience reviewing English-language contracts in an in-house legal department will be advantageous.
This role goes beyond general legal administrative support. Under the direction and supervision of lawyers, the successful candidate will support a broad range of matters, including corporate law, M&A, overseas business expansion, employment matters, compliance, dispute resolution, and international arbitration. Responsibilities will include legal research, assistance with drafting contracts and other legal documents, translation, matter management, and coordination with overseas offices.
This position offers regular exposure to international and cross-border matters, particularly those involving Japan and ASEAN.
Job Responsibilities:Legal Support
- Assist with legal research on laws, regulations, court decisions, and regulatory requirements under Japanese, Singapore, and other foreign laws
- Organize research findings and prepare reports and memoranda
- Assist with drafting contracts, legal opinions, applications, and other legal documents
- Assist with reviewing contracts and other legal documents
- Support due diligence for M&A transactions, corporate reorganizations, overseas expansion, and other corporate matters
- Support company incorporation, shareholders’ meetings, board meetings, and other corporate procedures
- Organize documents and evidence and conduct research in connection with litigation, international arbitration, mediation, and other dispute-related matters
- Support compliance matters, internal investigations, fraud investigations, and related matters
- Gather information on legal and regulatory frameworks in various jurisdictions
- Liaise and coordinate with lawyers and other professionals in Japan, ASEAN, and other jurisdictions
- Coordinate research requests with overseas offices and affiliated law firms, and consolidate their responses
- Support Japanese companies with overseas expansion and international business matters
- Support foreign companies entering the Japanese market and other Japan-related matters
- Assist with the coordination and management of matters involving multiple jurisdictions
- Translate and review contracts, legal opinions, litigation and arbitration documents, and other legal materials between Japanese and English
- Assist with preparing client materials, presentations, seminar materials, and other documents
- Organize and manage matter files, data rooms, and other related documentation
- Utilize AI and other legal technology tools for legal research, document preparation, and knowledge management
- Support matter management, including client communication and meeting coordination
- Assist with preparing seminars, newsletters, legal articles, and other publications
- Monitor and gather information on legal developments, including amendments to laws and regulations
- Provide other support as required for lawyers to effectively carry out their work
- Bachelor’s degree or above
- Ability to produce accurate written documents in Japanese, as the role requires handling Japanese-language legal contracts
- Comfortable working in English, as the role involves internal communication in English as well as translation of contracts between Japanese and English
- Basic proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other standard PC applications
