Legal Counsel - Intellectual Property

About the Role

Our client is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Legal Counsel specializing in Intellectual Property (IP) to join their innovative legal department. This is a fully remote position, allowing you to contribute your expertise from anywhere within South Africa. You will be responsible for protecting and managing the company's valuable IP portfolio, including patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets. This role requires a strategic thinker with a deep understanding of IP law and a passion for safeguarding innovation in a globally connected, remote-first environment.

• Develop and execute IP strategies to protect the company's innovations and brand.
• Conduct IP clearance searches, including patentability and freedom-to-operate analyses.
• Draft, file, and prosecute patent and trademark applications globally.
• Manage and enforce IP rights, including responding to infringement issues.
• Advise on IP licensing, joint development agreements, and other IP-related transactions.
• Provide training and guidance to internal teams on IP matters and best practices.

• Admitted Attorney of the High Court of South Africa with a strong focus on Intellectual Property Law.
• Minimum of 7 years of experience in IP law, including prosecution, enforcement, and transactional work.
• Proven experience managing a diverse IP portfolio.
• Excellent understanding of patent, trademark, copyright, and trade secret law.
• Strong analytical, research, and negotiation skills, with the ability to work independently.
