Litigation Associate, Remote/Hybrid – JSU Law (Nova Scotia/Ontario)
October 1, 2026

Associate Litigation Lawyer

Remote | Optional Halifax-based hybrid arrangement

Overview
We are looking for a motivated lawyer to become an integral member of our growing legal practice and team, who wants substantive responsibility early in their career. This is an opportunity to take meaningful carriage of files, work directly with clients, develop litigation strategy and advocacy skills, while working in a flexible, remote-first practice.

JSU LAW is a boutique litigation firm practising in Nova Scotia and Ontario. In addition to acting directly for businesses and individuals, we provide litigation support to other lawyers and law firms who engage us as litigation counsel, co-counsel, or for discrete litigation assignments. The result is a varied practice involving interesting clients, sophisticated legal issues, and work across multiple jurisdictions.

While we’re based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, we operate as a fully remote firm.

We are a law practice that emphasizes professionalism, practicality, and balance. We work hard when our files require it, but we do not believe unnecessary time online or rigid hours make for better lawyers. We care about excellent work, responsiveness to clients, and meeting commitments, while allowing for substantial flexibility for where and how you work.

Location:

We are based in Halifax and are therefore particularly interested in candidates located in Nova Scotia. Halifax/HRM-area lawyers can work fully remotely or use a flexible optional hybrid arrangement. We also welcome applications from strong Ontario-based candidates, for whom the position can be fully remote.

We’ll give you opportunities to:

Work in a professional, adaptable, and multijurisdictional practice;

Take the lead on files, develop litigation strategies, and build a flexible and multijurisdictional practice;

Meaningfully contribute throughout litigation files, and have direct involvement with and access to clients;

Be an integral team member during an exciting time when you can contribute to the growth and development of the firm;

Work closely with the firm’s principal lawyer, a former McCarthy Tétrault litigator, with direct mentorship on advocacy, strategy, client management, and practice development; and

Work directly with our firm’s lawyer-clients as part of our dynamic Litigation Support program.

Why JSU LAW?

Target base salary range between $80,000 – $110,000, commensurate with level of experience;

Opportunities for bonus based on annual KPIs, or file-by-file profit-sharing;

Paid vacation;

Software, tech, and hardware to support your work;

Transparent performance feedback; and

Opportunities for career development.

Ideal Candidate:

Graduate of a recognized JD/LLB program;

Licensed with the Law Society of Ontario and/or Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society. Must be willing and able to be called to the Ontario or Nova Scotia bar as needed for the role;

1-4 year post-call experience working in a law firm.

Experience with corporate and commercial litigation, injunctions, and real estate litigation is an asset;

Excellent written and oral advocacy skills;

Strong legal research and writing skills;

Motivated self-starter, with the capacity to take on and manage work independently, and the ability to research issues and find answers to questions as they arise;

Strong organizational and time management skills, able to manage multiple projects and deadlines at once;

Analytical with very strong proofreading skills and attention to detail;

Excellent written and verbal communication for a professional audience and setting;

Client-service oriented;

Familiarity with the Ontario and Nova Scotia Rules of Civil Procedure, and Ontario and Nova Scotia court practice directions is an asset.

What you’ll do:

Manage and take day-to-day carriage of litigation files;

Legal document drafting, including contracts, pleadings, motion materials, legal memoranda, and written arguments;

Legal research;

Develop legal strategies with clients;

Attend to hearings, discoveries, and other court or tribunal appearances; and

Other duties as required.

* Your writing sample should ideally be a legal memorandum, factum, written submission, or other example that demonstrates your legal analysis and writing. It may be redacted as necessary to protect confidential information.

This posting will remain open until the role has been filled.
