Position Summary

We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Operations Manager to join the Department of Surgery. In this key leadership role, you will drive the daily operational effectiveness of the department, ensuring seamless coordination across administrative and clinical functions. You will oversee daily operations, enhance organizational workflows, manage staff, and lead initiatives focused on process improvement and optimization.

The Operations Manager plays a critical role in supporting the day-to-day operations of the department. Key responsibilities include managing faculty contracts and appointments, coordinating recruitment and onboarding processes, and assisting with various faculty affair related tasks. The Operations Manager also oversees administrative staff, providing guidance, performance management, and support for professional development.

In addition, this role is responsible for a range of HR functions, including employee relations, compliance with HR policies, and coordination of annual performance review processes.

The successful candidate will be highly reliable, able to work effectively both independently and as part of a team, and will demonstrate a strong customer service–oriented approach.

  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.
  • If located at the UNM Children's Campus, successful candidate must pass a comprehensive post-offer, pre-employment criminal and New Mexico Children, Youth and Families Department (CYFD) fingerprint background check, and a continued successful status will be verified by periodic future background checks.
Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; at least 2 years of experience managing at least one of the following functional areas: fiscal services, administration and/or human resources AND 3 years of additional experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficient in drafting professional correspondence with strong command of grammar, punctuation, and spelling
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and cloud-based file management systems
  • Proven experience supervising administrative and clerical staff, with a focus on team development and support
