Summary

Assistant Grocery Department Managers plan, direct, and supervise work in the grocery department of a commissary. This may include a small warehouse or repositioning area, a separate receiving area, and/or contract shelf stocking. Assistant Grocery Department Managers exercise tact and diplomacy when interacting with commissary patrons, vendors, and/or brokers.

Work Conditions
  • Most work performed in the store display area, which is well‑lit and maintained at a comfortable temperature.
  • Storage or receiving area work may involve exposure to hot or cold weather, damp, and drafty conditions.
  • Work in chill or frozen storage rooms may involve temperature variations.
  • Risk of minor injuries such as cuts, scrapes, bruises, and slipping on wet floors.
  • Occasional operation of manual or electric pallet jack and/or forklift may be required.
  • Must wear protective clothing as required.
Duties / Responsibilities
  • Manage the merchandising operation and store space allocation programs.
  • Oversee the Not‑In‑Stock (NIS) listing and work with personnel to correct deficiencies.
  • Monitor commissary ordering, receiving, storage, stocking, pricing, handling, and selling of products.
  • Inspect all store equipment and report maintenance needs.
  • Inspect shelf merchandise for deterioration, spoilage, or deficiency.
  • Pull chill and frozen pallets for stocking and staging during primary stocking hours.
  • Supervise department employees, assign work, and balance workload.
  • Serve as a visitor control monitor during night operations.
  • Enforce all safety rules and regulations.
Qualifications
  • Education and Specialized

    Experience:

  • Specialized experience in retail procurement, distribution, merchandising, or restaurant/equipment management; or education that has provided equivalent knowledge, such as a degree in business administration, public administration, or agricultural economics.
  • For GS‑7:
    One year of specialized experience at the GS‑5 level or one full year of graduate study (or equivalent) in a related field.
  • For GS‑8:
    One year of specialized experience at the GS‑6 level or 1.5 years of graduate study (or equivalent).
  • For GS‑9:
    One year of specialized experience at the GS‑7 level or a master’s degree (or equivalent) in a related field.
  • For GS‑10:
    One year of specialized experience at the GS‑8 level or 2.5 years of graduate study (or equivalent).
  • Combination of experience and education counts towards qualifications; compute as described in the announcement.
  • Physical requirements:

    lift, push, pull, carry up to 40 lb unassisted; stand, stoop, kneel, bend, and climb for prolonged periods; attest to ability in questionnaire.
