Eastern Sierra & Great Basin Coordinator
Position at National Forest Foundation (NFF).
Job OverviewThe position is a 3-year term focused on building partnerships and supporting conservation projects across the California National Forests, particularly Humboldt-Toiyabe and Inyo National Forests.
Position FunctionReports directly to the Eastern Sierra Program Manager and works closely with California-based program staff and other NFF staff to provide project management, contract management, and program development support. Focus on delivering on conservation programs with the U.S. Forest Service, communities, NGOs and private sector partners.
Position Duties and Responsibilities- Work with U.S. Forest Service partners to develop scopes of work for forest health, wildfire risk reduction, community resilience, watershed improvement, ecosystem restoration, and recreation enhancement projects.
- Lead the advertisement, negotiation, and award of multiple contracts for services related to on-the-ground implementation of fuels reduction, commercial thinning, habitat restoration, critical access improvement, and community resilience projects.
- Coordinate implementation of fuels reduction, commercial thinning, habitat restoration, etc. with contractors, consultants, nonprofits, and the U.S. Forest Service.
- Help develop, modify, manage, and track large-scale Stewardship Agreements and Challenge Cost Share Agreements associated with forest restoration projects.
- Support expansion of private and public-sector supporters by actively pursuing funding opportunities, creating new development opportunities, and writing grants.
- Build and maintain relationships among the U.S. Forest Service, California NGO partners, and the NFF to implement community-based conservation partnerships.
- Strengthen NFF’s ability to support on-the-ground restoration and recreation projects by reinforcing existing collaborations and developing new partnerships.
- Serve as a point of contact for NFF conservation activities on the Humboldt-Toiyabe and/or Inyo National Forest area.
- Assist with the NFF program of work in California, which may include managing diverse short-term projects.
- Bachelor’s degree or professional certification in conservation, forestry, environmental science, a related field, or equivalent experience.
- Minimum three years of experience with conservation programs, project planning, and/or coordinating project implementation, preferably on federal lands.
- Authorization to work in the United States.
- Strong attention to detail and organized approach to daily work.
- Excellent research and analytical skills.
- Creativity and initiative; ability to respond quickly to changing priorities.
- Professional written and oral communication, with strong persuasive writing.
- Ability to translate technical requirements into lay terminology quickly.
- Team player with a positive attitude and ability to solve complex technical problems.
- Ability to work with a wide range of people with differing and sometimes conflicting opinions.
- Strong time management and organizational skills.
- Willingness to travel frequently within the Humboldt-Toiyabe and Inyo National Forests and beyond.
- Valid U.S. driver’s license and clean driving record.
- Ability to work in outdoor conditions.
- Flexible work schedule, including occasional weekend and evening events.
- Understanding of forest restoration treatment types and systems.
- Interest in wildfire mitigation and forest and watershed restoration projects.
The position can be based in a community within or near Humboldt-Toiyabe or Inyo National Forests. Preferred locations:
Reno and Carson City (NV) or Bridgeport, Mammoth Lakes, and Bishop (CA). Remote work from home with reliable internet required.
Competitive salary range $68,000 to $82,750, with potential to grow to $97,500 based on performance. State minimum wage updates observed.
