Duties & Responsibilities

This position will lead initiatives that advance energy efficiency and sustainability across its extensive building portfolio. Reporting to the Chief Decarbonization Officer and working closely with the Sr. Director of Operations, Directors of Energy Programs and Project Delivery, Facility Management teams, and other key stakeholders, this role will drive upgrade and optimization of HVAC and MEP systems, support retro-commissioning, modernize and enhance legacy Building Automation Systems (BAS), strengthen preventative maintenance strategies, equipment reliability and implement water efficiency measures-all in alignment with H+H's decarbonization and long-term sustainability goals.

General tasks and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

• Building Controls Upgrade Projects:
  Lead the design and execution of large-scale BAS upgrades while supporting facility-led local upgrades. Prioritize energy conservation, operational efficiency, migration to open, non-proprietary platforms, and integration of emerging technologies to advance decarbonization and system optimization.
• Energy Efficiency Projects:
  Oversee design and construction of complex energy efficiency projects with significant controls components. Collaborate with consultants and contractors, review and provide feedback on design packages, and ensure projects are delivered on time and within budget.
• Energy-Efficient Building Operations:
  Develop and implement HVAC optimization strategies to improve performance across H+H facilities, primarily hospital buildings. These initiatives will reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions in alignment with Local Law 97, leveraging advanced technologies and best practices to ensure peak system efficiency.
• Retro-Commissioning:
  Support Local Law 87 compliance and retro-commissioning initiatives to improve HVAC efficiency, reduce energy use, and cut greenhouse gas emissions. Coordinate with energy teams, facilities, and contractors to ensure successful delivery of retro-Cx measures.
• Operations & Maintenance (O&M):
  Guide Facility Management teams in implementing preventive and predictive maintenance practices for MEP systems, ensuring compliance with ASHRAE Standard 180. Review and refine O&M schedules to identify operational savings while maintaining safety and reliability in healthcare environments.
• Training & Outreach:
  Promote a culture of energy efficiency by encouraging staff participation in CUNY/DCAS Energy Management Institute courses. Develop and deliver specialized training on energy conservation and sustainable building practices for operations and executive staff, driving behavioral change and improved outcomes.
• Plan & Develop energy-efficient controls projects:
  Defines and reviews scopes of work for controls upgrade projects in collaboration with facility management teams, contractors, and consultants. Analyzes energy audits, retro-commissioning studies, and feasibility reports to inform project selection and recommend innovative controls technologies and optimization strategies.
• Technical Leadership & Staff Development:
  Provide coaching and guidance to engineers and technicians responsible for HVAC operations. Support troubleshooting of VFDs, BAS trending, schedule optimization, and use of air- and water-side economizers to improve system performance.
• Overseeing project administrative functions:
  Ensures the successful completion of administrative functions essential to energy project delivery, including preparing and reviewing work orders and Certificate to Proceed (CP) packages, initiating purchase orders, and managing change order registrations. Reviews and approves payment requests and facilitates timely financial close-out of projects by coordinating CP amendments and addressing funding shortfalls as needed.
• Controls Projects Support:
  Partner with Capital and Facilities teams on controls-related initiatives, ensuring alignment with organizational energy efficiency and sustainability priorities.
