Freelance Commercial Manager

Abatec is recruiting for a Tier One highways contractor seeking an experienced Freelance Commercial Manager to lead the commercial delivery of a £40m highways infrastructure project in Bridgwater.

You will take full ownership of the project’s commercial function, managing a small site-based commercial team while remaining hands-on with day-to-day delivery. This role is ideally suited to a commercially astute professional with strong NEC Option C experience and a proven background delivering major highways schemes for Tier One contractors.

Key Responsibilities

* Commercial lead for a £40m highways project

* Full commercial management under NEC Option C

* Cost control, forecasting, reporting, and cash flow management

* Management of change, compensation events, and commercial risk

* Subcontractor procurement and commercial administration

* Leadership and mentoring of QSs and AQSs

* Client-facing role, including commercial negotiations and reporting

* Supporting the Project Director and site leadership in achieving commercial targets

About You

* Proven experience as a Freelance Commercial Manager / Managing QS on Tier One highways or infrastructure projects

* Strong working knowledge of NEC contracts (Option C essential)

* Background in Highways, Infrastructure, or Major Civils

* Confident managing subcontractors and client relationships

* Comfortable operating in a live, delivery-focused project environment

Salary / Benefits

 * £550–£650 per day, depending on experience

* Long-term rolling contract with a reputable Tier One contractor

* Hybrid working – flexibility between site, office, and remote working
