Job Overview
To provide effective management to the Portering Services department. The post holder is responsible for the performance of the porter department through effective management of the porter shift managers and services ensuring the service is always delivered to the highest quality and most economical cost. The post holder will ensure that all operations are conducted to a high standard of customer care and in line with policy and practices.
The post holder will identify and highlight opportunities for the improvement of the service.

- Manage and motivate staff to maintain high service standards, ensuring shift managers complete regular checks and meet compliance requirements. Oversee service delivery within budget, adjusting provision as needed with the porter services manager.
- Recruit, induct, and train staff, ensuring appraisals, mandatory training and development plans are maintained.
- Lead positively through change, creating local policies aligned with Trust standards.
- Plan and manage complex rotas based on service demand, ensuring adequate cover and training time.
- Conduct interviews on sickness, bereavement, discipline, and grievances with professionalism and tact.
- Ensure Trust policies are followed to maintain governance and service quality.
- Manage Datix incidents, departmental risk assessments, and attend meetings or presentations for service improvement.
- Maintain effective communication with internal teams and contracted organisations on issues such as pay, rotas, and hours.
- Liaise with wards to ensure portering services meet agreed levels.
- Monitor compliance systems, quality processes, KPIs, and in‑house audits to support patient experience and clinical services.
- Produce timely reports, manage performance, and provide assurance on quality and safety.
- Develop reporting tools, analyse data, and support Facilities teams in meeting targets.
- Oversee the porter budget, report discrepancies and submit monthly recharge templates.

Person Specification Qualifications- Essential: HND or equivalent further management qualification.

Previous people management experience managing a large ancillary workgroup.

Thorough knowledge of portering services within a large acute Trust. - Essential:
Knowledge of NHS Agenda for Change terms and conditions and administrative and control measures required to ensure efficient delivery of a portering service. - Essential:

Wider knowledge of ancillary services within an NHS environment.
