role

The Waste Officer will join the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Sustainability team, a forward-thinking department at the forefront of the board’s commitment to environmental resource efficiency. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to meaningful, tangible change across the UK’s largest health board.

The Sustainability team coordinates the strategic implementation of the NHSGGC Climate Change and Sustainability Strategy to meet national standards, working across all sites to provide tactical support and guidance to staff, ensuring compliance and driving long-term environmental improvements.

The Waste Officer will assist with the management and development of NHSGGC’s waste management policy, strategy, and infrastructure while ensuring compliance with statutory standards. A key focus will be on implementing circular economy principles, driving recycling initiatives, and improving waste segregation practices.

All roles will be assessed for sponsorship eligibility in line with current Home Office requirements. NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) can only issue a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) where these are met.

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern
  • This is a full-time role working 36 hours per week
  • These hours will be worked - Monday to Friday
  • This is a permanent position, and you will be based at the New Victoria ACH
Key responsibilities

The Waste Officer will assist in the management and development of waste management policy, strategy and infrastructure, while ensuring compliance with statutory standards across all sites. The role involves supporting the implementation of circular economy principles and recycling initiatives, improving waste segregation practices, and ensuring all waste streams are correctly managed at the point of disposal.

You will provide guidance and support to both clinical and non-clinical departments, helping to embed best practice in waste handling. In addition, you will support the Operational Waste Manager with the procurement and monitoring of waste contracts, ensuring cost efficiency and evaluating contractor performance through audits and data analysis.

The post also includes assisting in the development of board-wide policies and waste minimisation programmes, planning and carrying out audits, and creating processes and training materials to promote compliance, improve recycling rates, and enhance overall environmental performance.

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job
  • Relevant degree in environmental management, environmental science, or equivalent professional experience in a similar organisation
  • Membership of a relevant professional body (e.g. IEMA or CIWEM) is desirable
  • Experience in contractor management is beneficial
  • Strong budget awareness and commercial understanding
  • Full driving licence would be desirable due to travel requirements across sites
