Managing Chaplain in Usk, a pivotal role offering leadership and pastoral care within the UK's justice system. Job Description

This management position involves leading and overseeing a multi-faith and belief chaplaincy team, ensuring the provision of religious and pastoral care to prisoners and staff within the establishment. While it is a managerial role rather than being faith‑specific, post holders must be endorsed by the respective HMPPS Faith and Belief Adviser, demonstrating a commitment to supporting diverse spiritual needs.

Key responsibilities include ensuring chaplains are accessible, managing the effective administration of chaplaincy services, and promoting HMPPS policies on diversity, decency, safety, and reducing re‑offending. The successful candidate will also be instrumental in delivering PSI 05/2016 Faith and Pastoral Care for Prisoners and broader chaplaincy initiatives, including both faith‑based and non‑faith‑based courses, contributing significantly to the well‑being of the prison community.

Requirements
  • Proven experience in a leadership or management role within a chaplaincy or pastoral care setting.
  • Endorsement by a respective HMPPS Faith and Belief Adviser is essential.
  • Ability to provide religious and pastoral care within your own faith or belief tradition, as well as appropriate pastoral care for all individuals irrespective of their faith or belief.
  • Strong understanding and ability to implement policies such as PSI 05/2016 Faith and Pastoral Care for Prisoners.
  • Demonstrated experience in team and personal management, including staff development, performance management, and conflict resolution.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to build relationships with support groups and external agencies.
  • Right to work in the UK, with visa sponsorship available for eligible foreign applicants.
Benefits
  • Generous Civil Service pension scheme.
  • Opportunities for professional development and spiritual growth.
  • Flexible working options, including full‑time, part‑time, job share, and flexible working arrangements.
  • A supportive work environment within the Ministry of Justice.
  • Access to employee assistance programmes and wellbeing support.
  • 25 days annual leave (rising to 30 after 5 years service), plus bank holidays.
How to Prepare

For Nigerian and African immigrants eyeing this Senior Chaplain role with the Ministry of Justice, thorough preparation is key. Focus on crafting a polished CV that highlights your leadership experience, pastoral care expertise, and any cross‑cultural or multi‑faith engagement, ensuring it aligns with UK professional standards.
