The Opportunity

Reporting to the CEO, the Director of Communications and Engagement is a senior leadership role responsible for shaping and executing ACADA’s communications, marketing, government relations, and member engagement strategies. This role ensures that all communications and engagement activities align with ACADA’s strategic priorities, brand values, and stakeholder expectations, and that the organization’s voice is consistent, credible, and impactful across all channels.

The Director will lead government relations, public relations, member and stakeholder engagement, marketing, and communications initiatives, while overseeing ACADA’s marketing and events team. As the lead for member engagement, this role is central to strengthening member value, retention, and participation across the association.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Communications & Marketing

  • Develop, implement, and oversee ACADA’s comprehensive communications and outreach strategy.
  • Lead multi-channel communications and marketing campaigns, including digital, print, media, and stakeholder communications.
  • Ensure consistent application of ACADA’s brand values across all communications and representative interactions.
  • Oversee content development, copywriting, editing, and visual presentation.

Government & Stakeholder Relations

  • Lead government relations and public relations initiatives at the provincial and federal levels.
  • Support funding strategy and reporting requirements, including communications related to government programs and industry representation.
  • Act as a key liaison with stakeholders, partners, and media as required.
  • Support issue management and, where applicable, crisis or media response.

Member Engagement & Events

  • Develop and execute member engagement and retention strategies that enhance value for ACADA members.
  • Guide and oversee member relations staff and engagement initiatives.
  • Oversee ACADA’s events and marketing activities in collaboration with the marketing and events team.
  • Lead, mentor, and support a high-performing communications, marketing, and events team.
  • Work closely with the CEO, Director of Operations and Business Development, and the Board of Directors on strategic initiatives and growth opportunities.
  • Contribute to organizational strategy through collaboration, critical thinking, and sector insight.
About You

The ideal candidate is a senior communications professional with a degree in communications, marketing, or a related field, along with 7+ years of progressive experience, including people leadership. With proven expertise in multi-channel communications and marketing campaigns, you have exceptional writing and storytelling skills, and a solid working knowledge of design and publishing tools. Experience working with Boards and engaging with provincial and federal government stakeholders, particularly in funding or industry association contexts is required.

Experience in crisis communications, media relations, non-profit or government-funded organizations, and bilingual French/English capability are considered assets.

This is a remote position that requires the successful candidate to live within HRM. Local and international travel is required.
