Job Description & How to Apply Below

Overview

Help promote our community Barn! Coordinate publicity for events, send a simple monthly newsletter to 2,200 supporters, and work alongside our current volunteer during a friendly handover. Flexible role, mostly home-based.

What difference will you make?

This role plays a key part in ensuring that the Barn remains visible, well-attended, and connected to its community.

By promoting our events through local and Bristol-based free publications, you would be helping us reach audiences who may not already be part of our mailing list or regular supporters. This wider visibility is essential for attracting new visitors, sustaining attendance at events and ensuring that the Barn continues to serve as an active and vibrant community space.

The monthly newsletter, sent to around 2,200 supporters, is one of our most important communication tools. It keeps our community informed about upcoming events, shares key updates and helps maintain a sense of connection between the Barn and its supporters. Without this regular communication, we would risk losing engagement with a large and valued audience who play a vital role in the life of the organisation.

Together, these activities directly support the Barn’s ability to continue running a diverse programme of events. Good publicity and consistent communication help ensure events are well attended, financially viable where relevant and accessible to a broad cross-section of the community. They also help us reach new audiences and strengthen our long-term sustainability.

What are we looking for?

We are looking for a volunteer with good written communication skills and a practical, organised approach to work.

Essential
  • Good written communication and ability to summarise information clearly
  • Organised and able to meet regular monthly/event deadlines
  • Comfortable using email and basic online tools
  • Reliable and able to work independently
Desirable
  • Experience of writing for public audiences (e.g., newsletters, marketing, blogging, journalism)
  • Familiarity with email newsletters or basic mailing systems
  • Confidence contacting publications and submitting listings
  • Interest in local community, arts, heritage or events
What will you be doing?

We are seeking a Volunteer Publicity Coordinator to support the promotion of our Barn events and communications with our supporter base.

The key responsibilities of the role are to ensure that our events are effectively publicised to the widest possible audience, both locally and across Bristol-based free publications and community channels. This includes preparing and submitting event listings and press information to relevant publications, maintaining and updating our publicity contacts and ensuring deadlines are met for each event cycle.

A second core responsibility is the production of our monthly email newsletter, which is sent to approximately 2,200 supporters. The newsletter shares important updates from the Barn, highlights upcoming events and helps maintain engagement with our community. This involves collating content, drafting and editing concise copy and sending the newsletter using our email system.

The role is largely self-managed and can be carried out flexibly from home, with most activity concentrated around event announcements and the monthly newsletter schedule.

The current volunteer has developed an established and effective system for both publicity and newsletter production and is stepping down after many years in the role. A key priority for this recruitment is therefore a supported handover period, during which the new volunteer will work alongside her to understand existing contacts, processes and timing requirements. This will ensure continuity and provide full confidence in managing the role going forward.

The Barn is a small, community-focused organisation run by a committed team of volunteers and staff who work together to deliver a varied programme of events. This role sits within our wider communications and events support activity and plays an important part in ensuring our work is visible and well attended.
