Marine Conservation Institute is seeking a Communications Intern to lead the day-to-day planning, design, and execution of our social media presence across Instagram , Facebook , Linked In , and Bluesky . Working closely with our Communications and Public Relations Coordinator, you will gain hands-on experience translating ocean conservation science into engaging, timely content for a public audience.
Once social media responsibilities are consistently met, interns may have the opportunity to expand their role by contributing to other communications efforts, such as our quarterly newsletter, press materials, or pieces for the Institute's blog, On The Tide (opens in new tab) , or by developing a personal project in collaboration with the Communications and Public Relations Coordinator.
Reports to: Communications and Public Relations Coordinator
Location: Remote (U.S. based applicants only)
Period: 3 months (currently reviewing applications for October 29 - January 29 )
Hours: 20 hours/week
Qualifications and SkillsQualifications:
- Must be based in the United States. We are unable to accept international applications at this time.
- College student currently enrolled, or applicable experience.
- Demonstrated interest and ability to think creatively and present information visually.
- Excellent communication, writing, and organizational skills.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks while demonstrating attention to detail.
- Interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment.
- Interest in ocean, climate change, and environmental issues.
- Experience with Google Suite and Adobe Creative Suite.
- Experience in graphic design, video editing, or multimedia storytelling.
- Experience with scheduling or analytics tools (e.g., Google Analytics, Meta Business Suite, Buffer, Hoot Suite, etc.).
Core responsibilities:
- Plan, draft, and design social media content in line with the institute's content calendar and brand voice.
- Schedule and publish posts across Instagram, Facebook, Linked In, and Bluesky on time and as planned.
- Distill complex scientific information into clear, engaging content for our audiences.
- Monitor engagement and share basic performance insights to help refine future content.
- Help identify relevant journalists, experts, organizations, and influencers to engage with or amplify online.
- Check in regularly with the Communications and Public Relations Coordinator, sharing progress, drafts for review, and any questions or roadblocks.

- Attend all scheduled meetings and check-ins on time.
- Meet agreed-upon deadlines, and communicate early if a deadline is at risk.
- Take ownership of assigned tasks and follow through to completion.
Opportunities for growth:
Interns who consistently meet the expectations above may, with approval from the Communications and Public Relations Coordinator, take on broader responsibilities, such as contributing to newsletters, blog posts, press materials, or wider communications strategy, or developing a personal project aligned with their interests.
CompensationThis internship includes a stipend of $1,000 USD total. No benefits or relocation costs are provided. We are happy to work with interns and their universities to obtain academic credit for internship work. It is the intern's responsibility to negotiate this relationship with their institution and verify that the internship training and experience meets academic credit requirements.
