Position Overview
Urban Tilth has an opening for a Grant Writer. The position of Grant Writer will be responsible for writing foundation and government grant applications and proposals; editing and submitting funder reports, reviewing vetted prospects, and planning and implementation of individual donor campaigns. This position will be a member of a 3-person team, including the Executive Director, collectively responsible for raising the annual programs and operations budget (currently $6.5M+).
PositionResponsibilities
- Research, prepare, write and submit foundation and government grant applications to support Urban Tilth’s annual programs and operations budget
- Work with the Executive Director and communications team to plan and prepare individual donor campaigns with support for Grants Administration staff
- Implement individual donor campaigns with support for Grants Administration staff and communications team
- Work with fundraising team to edit and update boilerplate language documents
- Work with grants administration staff to thoroughly review and vet prospects and maintain and update annotated grants pipelines within our grants management platform
- Update our donor database and grants management platforms with foundation and government grant information as well as priority organizational programs and projects which need funding support
- Work with communications team and programs staff to collect data, stories, and images to complete funder reports and other strategic communications in a timely and creative manner that truly shares what is happening in the field with our funders
- Edit, add necessary content and formatting, and submit funder reports drafted by grants administration staff
- Assist with the implementation of Urban Tilth’s annual fundraising plan
- Assist with the development of the annual departmental budget and organizational annual report
- Create, maintain, and deepen supportive relationships with agency and foundation partners
- Spend a minimum of 8 hours a month participating in different Urban Tilth programs so program and community knowledge is intimate and tactile
- Attend funder webinars, retreats and convenings (may require some travel in state and out of state, or work on weekends or evenings)
- Attend professional development training as needed to continue to improve and update skill sets and or expand knowledge of the areas of food, social, economic, and environmental justice in which Urban Tilth works
- Attend Urban Tilth monthly all-staff meetings, weekly team meetings, mandatory all-staff events, and annual all‑staff strategic planning retreats
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in working in storytelling and/or fund development for community-based organizations
- Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and manage multiple tasks and deadlines concurrently
- Clear talent for sharing compelling food, climate, racial, and social justice narratives to various audiences
- Excellent writing, storytelling, communication, and project management skills
- Ability to anticipate, understand, and respond to the needs of donors and meet or exceed their expectations
- Successfully experienced working with diverse communities such as African Americans and Latinx communities
- Successfully experienced working on a diverse team to serve a diverse community
- Experience in using fundraising databases and grants management platforms such as Raiser's Edge, Instrumentl, etc.
- Experience using Google Docs, Mail Chimp or Constant Contact, and social media
- Able to set priorities, develop a work schedule, monitor progress towards goals, and track details, data, information, and activities
- Some experience with graphic design, videography, or photography
- 40 hours per week (Full‑time)
- Minimum of 3 days in person with some opportunities to work from home
- Annual salary range: $85,000–$95,000
