The Sourland Conservancy carries out its mission to protect the Sourland region through educational programs and advocacy efforts. The Sourland region is a 90 square mile area of critical forest, grassland and wetland habitats that lies within parts of Hunterdon, Mercer and Somerset counties. It is an island of biodiversity in a sea of encroaching sprawl. Characterized by a fragile eological balance, the Sourland Mountain region face pressures that threaten to deplete and degrate the water and delicate ecology of the area.
The region boasts the largest contiguous forest in Central NJ and is an essential stopover for Neotropical migrant songbirds. The Sourland Conservancy seeks to educate residents and visitors to the Sourlands about its ecological, historical and recreational value. The organization also advocates for municipal ordinances that support the protection and preservation of the Sourlands.
The Volunteer Coordinator helps strengthen the Conservancy’s volunteer program by welcoming new volunteers, supporting team leads, and ensuring clear communication between staff and volunteers. This person plays a key role in helping our community members find meaningful ways to contribute to the Conservancy’s mission.
Key Responsibilities- Maintain the volunteer interest list and communicate upcoming opportunities.
- Help onboard new volunteers, including sharing basic training materials and connecting them with team leads.
- Check in periodically with active volunteers and collect feedback.
- Coordinate volunteer recognition and appreciation efforts (e.g., thank-you emails, photos, event shout-outs).
- Support the scheduling and organization of volunteer projects and tabling events.
- Track volunteer hours and help report participation data to staff.
- Suggest improvements to enhance the volunteer experience and retention.
Approximately 8–12 hours per month.
Some flexibility for remote work; occasional attendance at events encouraged.
Skills & Qualities- Friendly and welcoming communicator who enjoys connecting with people.
- Organized and dependable, with strong attention to detail.
- Comfortable using email, spreadsheets, and basic online forms.
- Interest in environmental stewardship and community building.
- Prior experience coordinating volunteers or managing teams is helpful but not required.
- Orientation on the Conservancy’s mission, programs, and volunteer systems.
- Ongoing mentorship and collaboration with Conservancy staff and volunteer leads.
Access to templates, tracking tools, and communication materials.
