Position: Make the Road Connecticut

Make the Road Connecticut (MRCT) is a statewide organization that builds the power of immigrants and low‑income Latinx in Hartford and Bridgeport to achieve dignity and justice. We do this by community organizing, legal and survival services, transformative education, and policy innovation. We tackle the issues that directly impact our communities of color: immigration reform, economic justice, education equity, LGBTQ justice, womxn’s justice and youth justice.

Make the Road Connecticut is a project of Make the Road States.

Make the Road Action (MRA), a 501(c)(4) organization is committed to building power for justice in immigrant and low‑income working‑class communities of color. MRA operates in five states – New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Nevada, and Pennsylvania. We work to create social change, connect voters to the candidates and issues that are most important to them, and work hands‑on in a fast‑paced environment to create long‑term impact in the communities that need it most.

Opening:

The Community Organizer primary responsibilities are building and supporting the Hartford parent committee (Madres Guerreras) through base building, leadership development and executing local campaigns to guarantee language access to immigrant parents within Hartford Public Schools and, to further develop a rapid response plan and network. The organizer engages allies across the state and the city to advance our organizational power. The Community Organizer is based in Hartford and reports to the Organizing Director.

Key Responsibilities but not limited to:
  • Identifying, recruiting and developing community members.
  • Facilitate committee meetings and develop members to facilitate their meetings.
  • Develop and implement campaign work plans.
  • Plan local actions with the parent strategy committee.
  • Develop testimonies with members for the press.
  • Work with directly impacted people to give testimonies that advance our campaigns.
  • Navigate community and political relationships and empower parent leaders to do this for their own committee.
  • Develop political education materials in conjunction with our campaigns and facilitate regular political education workshops as part of the parent committee meetings.
  • Collaborate with the Bridgeport parent committee to build our statewide power.
  • Co‑leads the education coalition efforts.
  • Develop a leadership pipeline that sustains parent leader and activist growth and ensures that members are taking leads on outreach, popular education training and other work that they are doing through 1‑1s, phone banking, and parent KYR training.
  • Meet weekly and monthly goals to grow the base and membership based on experience level.
  • Part of the organizing team and works to meet goals for team events, actions or various activities that move the organizational vision forward and make a positive impact on the organizational health.
Requirements:
  • Eligible to work in the US
  • At least 1 year of experience in community, labor, or other relevant organizing fields.
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice, community organizing, leadership development and the elevation of directly impacted and marginalized people to create change.
  • Speaking and writing in English/Spanish is required.
  • A car and driver’s license is required.
  • High School Diploma or 2‑4 year degree is preferred.
  • Be open to working evenings and weekends.
  • A high level of self‑motivation and a proven ability to work independently as well as collaboratively.
  • Ability to manage simultaneous projects in a fast‑paced environment at a growing organization.
  • Ability to travel between Hartford and Bridgeport when necessary.
  • Required to be fully vaccinated with COVID‑19 vaccine prior to employment at MRCT/MRStates.
  • Required to work from home and satellite offices as needed.
  • Be proficient in MS Office Suite, particularly with Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Possess excellent written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Be highly reflective and able to offer and receive feedback on a regular basis.
  • Demonstrate a keen eye for detail and the ability to multitask in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Demonstrate a high degree of discretion dealing with confidential information.
