Terms of Reference

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the UN Refugee Agency, is a global organization dedicated to saving lives, protecting rights, and building a better future for people forced to flee their homes because of conflict and persecution. UNHCR leads international action to protect refugees, forcibly displaced communities, and stateless people. UNHCR works in collaboration with governments, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and other international partners to provide humanitarian assistance, advocate for refugees’ rights, and find durable solutions for displaced populations.

UNHCR’s core functions include ensuring the safety and well‑being of refugees, advocating for their rights, ensuring access to rights and services and facilitating durable solutions.

The intern will be placed within the Policy Development Unit under the guidance of the Assistant Protection Officer. The specific team focuses on capacity development and monitoring activities related to PMM/PDMMs and on analyzing and monitoring registration practices, contributing to the overall protection and assistance efforts of UNHCR.

Internship at UNHCR provides a unique opportunity to contribute to global humanitarian efforts and gain hands‑on experience in protection. The intern will engage in tasks such as organizing and monitoring capacity development activities, analysing online evaluations, producing visualisations of registration practices, and developing skills in data analysis, translation and cross‑functional collaboration. Participation in meetings, workshops, and training sessions will allow the intern to contribute directly to UNHCR’s mission of safeguarding the rights and well‑being of refugees.

The intern will assist the Policy Development Unit Registration team in media monitoring, preparing and following up on trainings conducted, coordinating and communicating with other Units, checking and monitoring monthly statistics, translating relevant documents to English and/or Turkish, following up on Counselling Line tickets, preparing maps and graphs, and supporting the Registration Team on other clerical tasks and duties as required.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Assist the Unit in organising and following up on logistics of capacity development and monitoring activities carried out for/by PMM/PDMM staff and third‑party personnel deployed to PMM/PDMM, and with analysis of online pre‑test post‑tests and evaluation forms.
  • Follow up on regular charts/reports with regard to activity monitoring.
  • Support production of graphs, tables, charts and maps on different registration practices analysed by the Unit.
  • Cross‑check accuracy of dashboards produced by the functional unit against the calculations made by the Associate Protection Officer.
  • Participate in meetings, workshops, trainings, take notes and draft minutes / reports.
  • Assist in the translation (English–Turkish) of documents and support proofreading of reports and documents translated.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Minimum qualifications required

  • Be a recent graduate (completed studies within two years of applying) or a current graduate/undergraduate student from a university or higher education facility accredited by IAU/UNESCO.
  • Have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant to the work of UNHCR.

NOTE:

An individual whose father, mother, son, daughter, brother or sister is a staff member of UNHCR, including a Temporary Appointment holder or a member of the Affiliate Workforce, is not eligible for an internship.

Desirable qualifications and skills

  • Graduated or under‑graduated student in social sciences, political sciences, law, interpretation, or other related fields.
  • Comparative analysis and basic numeracy skills on graphs and charts, and percentage change.
  • Advanced user of MS Office (MS Access, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.).
