The Elimu Digital Gateway Foundation is dedicated to transforming education in East Africa by donating technology and improving digital literacy in schools. The organization believes every child should have access to the tools and skills needed to succeed in a rapidly modernizing world. Through its programs, the foundation donates computers and tech supplies to underfunded schools, empowers students to explore STEM careers, and works to bridge the digital divide to promote equity in education.

Its vision is of connected classrooms, skilled students, and empowered communities, using technology and education to build a brighter future. Prospective trustees will join a committed team focused on creating lasting impact for learners and communities across the region.

The Charity Trustee role is a volunteer, remote position. Trustees will contribute to setting the foundation’s strategic direction, ensuring effective governance, and overseeing the delivery of programs that advance digital literacy and technology access in East African schools. Trustee responsibilities include attending monthly board and committee meetings, reviewing financial and operational reports, supporting fundraising and partnership activities, and monitoring compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.

Trustees must be able to commit to 15-20 hours per month. Trustees will collaborate with fellow board members and staff to evaluate program impact, manage organizational risks, and promote the foundation’s mission to donors, partners, and community stakeholders. The role requires active engagement in decision-making, constructive challenge, and support for the executive team to ensure sustainable growth and responsible use of resources.

• Ability to provide strategic oversight, contribute to long‑term planning, and support mission‑driven decision‑making.
• Experience in charity governance, nonprofit management, or board‑level leadership, with understanding of fiduciary duties and regulatory compliance.
• Financial literacy, including the ability to interpret budgets, financial statements, and risk reports to ensure robust stewardship of funds.
• Strong communication, collaboration, and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to represent the foundation to partners and supporters.
• Background or interest in education, international development, digital inclusion, or technology for social impact.
• Capacity to commit sufficient time for meetings, preparation, and follow‑up activities, and to be present for Zoom meetings as required.
• Integrity, sound judgment, and alignment with the foundation’s values of equity, empowerment, and community impact.
• Previous trustee or leadership experience in the charity sector is beneficial but not essential; training and induction can be provided.
• All trustees must comply with safeguarding policies and undergo DBS checks if required by the role.
• UK charity trustees must be over 18 years old and not disqualified from acting as a trustee (e.g. due to bankruptcy or unspent convictions).
