Job Summary:

Ministry with Students, is one of the key mission areas of The Salvation Army. The Student Outreach Worker will serve to extend the mission of The Salvation Army which has always put evangelism hand-in-hand with social action programmes, ministering to physical and social needs as well as spiritual. Operating within a ‘being-with’ and ‘being-for’ mode of mission to increase the engagement with, and full participation of, Students in the life of The Salvation Army with the goal to build communities of faith which will transform lives with the good news of Jesus.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and deliver a range of innovative student centred mission outreach, engagement and discipleship activities, including relationships that will contribute to meeting the identified needs of students.
  • Consult with and involve Students in making decisions about themselves and development of positive activities that encourage the development of Christian identity, purpose and belonging.
  • Creatively promote and develop discipleship resources within The Salvation Army’s tradition of social change and justice including practical service, advocacy and campaigning that are rooted in the Denominations theological beliefs and practises.
  • Grow The Salvation Army’s work with students through effective communication, e.g share learning, good practise, innovation, ideas, key contacts and resources, including appropriate use of social media to enhance and promote leadership, discipleship and mission.
  • Attend Territorial Youth and Student events and gatherings, and participation in a territorial wide learning community around Youth & Students outreach ministry.
Successful Candidate Will Have
  • A nationally recognised qualification in youth work and/or good experience of working with youth in areas of outreach, discipleship and leadership.
  • The ability to think and reflect theologically around mission and discipleship with an in-depth understanding of cultural pressures facing Youth & Students to develop their faith in Jesus.
  • The ability to work flexibly to deliver the requirements of your role such as evening work/weekend work/overnight and residential weeks throughout the year.
  • Technical skills relevant to the delivery of your duties including project management skills, financial management skills and stakeholder engagement skills including strong experience of social media.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to develop successful, collaborative and influential working relationships prioritise work, and be able to respond to tight deadlines.
  • (This role has an occupational requirement that the post holder must be a committed and practising Christian)

Appointment will be subject to satisfactory references, a criminal record check (DBS:
An Enhanced Child barred list DBS Disclosure, Disclosure Scotland and Access NI certificate.
