Who Should Attend

Who Should Attend: This program is appropriate for any nurse that provides direct or indirect supervision to direct support staff. While the content may appeal most to nursing home staff, the general concepts can be applied to assisted living and home-based programs, such as home health and other home-based services.

Program Objectives
  • Explain why nursing leadership is important in the LTSS field to support positive clinical outcomes
  • Describe why coaching CNAs can lead to better care in daily practice and better working relationships
  • Identify situations in which coaching CNAs can be used effectively and how to provide coaching to direct support staff
  • Define the steps in critical thinking and how critical thinking can lead to more satisfactory outcomes for staff and residents
  • Know what CNAs would like nurses to communicate to be most effective
  • Explore how communication styles can differ and describe how nurses can communicate more effectively to improve clinical outcomes
  • Describe how staff diversity can influence work situations, and identify ways to improve staff interactions with those they support
  • Plan ways to work effectively with management to address workplace challenges and implement change, ensuring the improvements are incorporated into daily practice to result in better clinical outcomes
Structure of the Program

This all-virtual nurse learning program is for Leading Age members and will utilize the Nurse LEAD materials available through the Leading Age Learning Hub. Participants will sign up for the series to collectively participate and will complete the modules in the Learning Hub prior to attending each live virtual session. Participants will be able to discuss applicable lessons on the modules with other participants from across the state.

Implementing the lessons as a group will deepen understanding, provide discussion opportunities, and strengthen the ability to extend learning to their own community. Experienced nurse leaders from across the state will participate in facilitation of this group to share experiences and support nurses at all levels to improve their clinical and leadership skills. Aging services nurse leadership experts will also share learning lessons with the group on the weekly topics being discussed.
