Staff Nurse (Temporary) – Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit – 5 (CVICU-5)
Unit‑based temporary RN position in the Cardiovascular Adult Intermediate Care Unit. Positions do not qualify for UMHS benefits; negotiated at the department level. Not covered by collective bargaining; union membership for per diem after 400 hours; temporary APRN employees and MVC not eligible for per diem.
Job SummaryThis job opening is for a Unit‑Based Temporary RN position in the Cardiovascular Adult Intermediate Care Unit.
Responsibilities- Provide direct nursing care to patients who have recently undergone cardiac, thoracic, or vascular surgery, including coronary artery bypass, heart and lung transplantation, heart valve repair, ventricular assist devices, esophageal procedures, carotid re‑vascularization, and aneurysm repairs.
- Collaborate with the Advanced Practice Team and participate in patient/family conferences, patient care rounds, and referrals.
- Perform charge nurse responsibilities as assigned.
- Assist in research studies and quality assurance activities.
- Current license to practice nursing in the state of Michigan.
- Minimum 2 years of current ICU or ED RN experience.
- BSN preferred.
- Minimum 2 years of cardiovascular patient experience or relevant skills (Cath Lab, Cardiac Medicine, Vascular Surgery/Medicine, Telemetry).
- Adaptability to change.
- Demonstrates time‑management skills.
- Experience with arterial lines.
- Proficiency in titrating hemodynamic medications.
- EPIC documentation experience.
- Ability to prioritize a plan of care for the patient.
- Accepts responsibility for errors and admits mistakes.
- Offers open feedback to team members.
- Shift: Day/Night.
- Minimum 36 hours per schedule.

Cardiovascular Center – CVC 5 Intensive Care Unit. - Hybrid or mobile/remote work mode is at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually and may change at any time.
This temporary position may meet eligibility requirements for health‑care benefits.
Per Diem / Unit‑Based Temporary Nurse GuidelinesPer diem or unit‑based temporary nurses working three or more shifts per scheduling period will be scheduled to work a minimum of two weekend shifts per scheduling period. Nurses working two or fewer shifts per scheduling period are not required to meet the weekend requirements. Per diem nurses are expected to work a portion of scheduled shifts on off‑shift days (recommended 25%).
Additional guidelines may be established by managers based on individual unit scheduling requirements.
