Charge Nurse RN II – Colorado Mental Health Hospital, Fort Logan (South Denver)

Location & Schedule

3520 W Oxford Avenue, Denver, CO 80236. Full‑time, on‑site. Shift: B (06:00‑18:30).

Job Overview

We are seeking an exceptional individual to lead nursing care in a mental health setting. The role includes acute care, chronic support, assessment, and interventions.

Responsibilities
  • Assess, plan, coordinate, provide, and evaluate nursing care for patients with psychiatric and medical conditions, documenting all pertinent data.
  • Utilize nursing theory and concepts to develop nursing plans of care and therapeutic interventions, including individual counseling, psycho‑educational and teaching groups, and milieu management.
  • Communicate the nursing plan of care to the interdisciplinary team and ensure thorough documentation.
  • Provide shift‑to‑shift hand‑off and round on patients to assess psychiatric and medical status.
  • Notify medical staff of changes in patient condition and need for evaluations and orders.
  • Report patient‑care concerns to supervisor and physicians as indicated.
  • Direct, coordinate, and implement medical and psychiatric crisis intervention in clinical emergencies, ensuring compliance with nursing standards and policies (e.g., de‑escalation, seclusion/restraint, cardiopulmonary resuscitation).
  • Assure a safe, therapeutic environment by planning and implementing milieu management techniques and allocating responsibilities.
  • Provide clinical and administrative supervision of nursing staff on duty and oversee the care of high‑acuity patients as needed.
  • Administer medications and/or provide backup to the assigned medication administrator, ensuring accurate documentation and patient safety.
  • Deliver patient teaching on preventive health, illness management, coping skills, social and living skills, and medication side effects.
  • Contribute nursing input to interdisciplinary treatment planning and unit programming, serving as a liaison between patient, family, physicians, ancillary staff, and supervisors.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Work Environment

The work setting may involve challenging patients, locked units, fast‑paced team dynamics, and the need for immediate, critical decision‑making. Maintaining professional responsibility and continued education is expected.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Current, valid licensure as a Registered Nurse from the Colorado Board of Nursing or a state participating in the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC).
  • Two (2) years of professional experience in an occupational field related to the position.
  • Education may substitute for up to two (2) years of required experience on a year‑for‑year basis.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and apply the nursing process to provide adequate patient care.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand treatment plans and provide appropriate interventions.
  • Demonstrated ability to direct the shift through training, mentorship, and development.
  • Strong work ethic based on self‑motivation, loyalty, honesty, and integrity.
  • Dependable, responsible, and adaptable.
Essential Attributes
  • Must be able to see and hear to observe, address, and respond to potential breaches in safety and security; work in situations involving assaultive behavior, physical control, and restraint situations.
  • Must be able to lift 50+ pounds on occasion.
Conditions of Employment
  • Availability for shift work—including nights, evenings, back‑to‑back, weekends, and holidays—as needed.
  • Must pass a pre‑employment physical.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age or older.
  • Must establish active status in the eNLC and notify the Colorado Board within 30 days of arrival.
  • Required flu vaccination unless authorized exemption provided.
  • Full background check (name check, TRAILS, drug screen, and fingerprinting).
  • Must possess a valid, unrestricted U.S. driver’s license.
  • May involve handling or exposure to hazardous materials and transporting patients.
  • Essential services designation requires reporting without delay or interruption to provide essential or emergency services.
  • Applicants who were disciplinarily terminated or resigned in lieu of termination from prior state employment must disclose and explain such circumstances; failure to do so may disqualify the applicant.
