About the Position

This role provides nursing leadership and direction for staff and offers therapeutic work in the psychiatric care of mentally ill patients hospitalized mary responsibilities include applying nursing expertise to deliver safe and effective care, coordinating interdisciplinary teams, and managing crisis interventions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assess, coordinate, provide and evaluate nursing care for patients with psychiatric and medical conditions, documenting all pertinent data.
  • Develop nursing plans of care and therapeutic interventions (e.g., individual counseling, psycho educational groups, milieu management) based on nursing theory and concepts.
  • Communicate nursing plans to the interdisciplinary team and ensure documentation is completed and information is shared during shift changes.
  • Notify medical staff of changes in patient condition and need for evaluations and orders; report patient care concerns to supervisors and physicians as indicated.
  • Direct, coordinate and implement medical and psychiatric crisis interventions (e.g., de‑escalation, seclusion/restraint, cardiopulmonary resuscitation) in clinical emergencies.
  • Escort patients to activities and appointments on‑campus and in the community, including driving patients to appointments.
  • Assume responsibility for paperwork, ensuring confidentiality and compliance with policies.
  • Determine safety of patients returning from general hospital, assessing staff competency, equipment needs and staffing levels.
  • Collaborate with Nurse Manager and treatment team to recommend schedule changes that benefit patients.
  • Function as Charge Nurse during specific shifts, providing clinical and administrative supervision of nursing staff on duty.
  • Evaluate and administer medication, monitoring effectiveness, side effects and drug interactions; follow all policies for medication documentation.
  • Delegate work assignments to licensed and unlicensed personnel, ensuring timely completion and providing clinical leadership and teaching.
  • Teach patients and families about preventive health care, illness management, coping skills, social skills, living skills, and medication indications/side effects.
  • Serve as liaison within the interdisciplinary team, facilitating communication among patient, family, doctors, ancillary staff and supervisors.
  • Maintain updated skills, knowledge and competencies through continuing education, supervision and literature review.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Current, valid licensure as a Registered Nurse from the Colorado Board of Nursing or any state participating in the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC).
  • At least 21 years of age (due to juvenile population served).
Conditions of Employment
  • Availability for shift work including nights, evenings, back‑to‑back, weekends and holidays.
  • Full background and reference checks required.
  • May be required to work days, evenings and nights.
  • Exposure to hazardous materials (bodily fluids or caustic chemicals) possible.
  • Must possess a valid, unrestricted U.S. Driver’s License.
  • May need to escort patients to medical appointments or attend training.
  • Former State employees disciplinarily terminated or resigned in lieu of termination must disclose details; failure to do so may disqualify the applicant.
