Overview
To provide high-quality, person-centred nursing care to individuals at Manston STHF & Western Jet Foil. The role supports adults from diverse cultural backgrounds who may have experienced trauma, uncertainty, or complex migration journeys. The postholder will work within a multidisciplinary healthcare team to deliver assessments, ongoing clinical care, health promotion, and emergency response in a secure, non-punitive environment.
Main duties of the jobClinical Care
- Conduct initial health assessments on arrival, including screening for vulnerabilities such as trauma, mental health concerns, chronic illness, or torture/violence indicators.
- Manage a wide range of physical health needs including long-term conditions, infectious diseases screening, wound care, and acute presentations.
- Support patients experiencing stress, anxiety, or distress related to immigration processes, detention, and uncertainty.
- Carry out medication administration and clinical procedures in line with NMC guidelines and Home Office healthcare policies.
Safeguarding & Vulnerability Identification
- Identify and support individuals who may be victims of torture, trafficking, or exploitation, following Rule 35/ATV processes where relevant.
- Escalate clinical or safeguarding concerns promptly through appropriate channels.
- Work with external agencies, NGOs, and legal representatives as required.
Security & Risk Awareness
- Maintain professional boundaries and adhere to all security and safety protocols specific to IRC operations.
- Collaborate with Home Office and detention custody staff to ensure a safe and supportive environment while prioritising patient wellbeing.
Multidisciplinary Collaboration
- Work closely with GPs, mental health teams, social care, Home Office staff, and interpreters to coordinate high-quality care.
- Participate in case reviews, health pathways, and mental health or vulnerability meetings.
Cultural Sensitivity & Communication
- Provide trauma-informed, culturally competent care to detainees from diverse backgrounds.
- Use interpreters effectively to ensure clear communication and safe clinical decision-making.
Health Promotion
- Provide targeted health education, including infectious disease prevention, long-term condition management, nutrition, and mental wellbeing.
- Support detainees in understanding and managing their own health needs.
Post-registration clinical experience in acute, community, or primary care settings.
Evidence of ongoing CPD.
Experience working with asylum seekers, refugees, or culturally diverse communities.
Knowledge of trauma-informed practice.
Experience working with vulnerable adults, safeguarding processes, and Rule 35/ATV reports.
