Community Staff Nurse - School Nursing

Registered NMC nurses are invited to join an innovative service provided by South Warwickshire University NHS Foundation Trust, commissioned by Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council. The role supports the Healthy Child Programme for children and young people aged 0–19 across schools and the community in Solihull.

The position requires high motivation, compassion, excellent communication and teamwork abilities. It offers mentoring of pre‑registration students and new staff, regular safeguarding and clinical supervision, and professional development including specialist Community Public Health Nurse training after 12 months of employment.

Main duties of the job
  • Deliver and evaluate preventive services and universal Public Health programmes within schools and the surrounding community.
  • Manage caseloads assigned by the School Nurse, including responding to alerts, secondary assessments, brief interventions, and feedback to the School Nurse.
  • Collaborate with children, young people, families, schools and the community to promote awareness of the School Nursing Service and its accessibility outside school hours.
  • Conduct health need assessments (e.g., ASQ, National Childhood Measurement Programme) and provide timely interventions.
  • Coordinate with healthcare professionals, parents and schools to fulfill children’s health needs within the school environment.
  • Support transitions from primary to secondary education and monitor health questionnaires.
  • Adhere to Solihull Local Safeguarding Children Partnership policies, including initiating referrals and reporting to the School Nurse.
  • Attend Trust statutory and mandatory training programmes; maintain up‑to‑date mandatory training records.
  • Maintain accurate, contemporaneous records in accordance with NMC and Trust guidelines.
  • Plan, coordinate and manage workload, prioritising tasks with Band 6 or 7 support.
Job responsibilities
  • Implement and deliver the Healthy Child Programme to the school‑age population, supporting initiatives such as sexual health, risk behaviour and emotional needs.
  • Support health needs assessments and respond to identified needs, feeding back to the School Nurse.
  • Provide drop‑in sessions in senior schools and offer advice, support and referrals as appropriate.
  • Use profiling tools and local data sources (e.g., Chimere, Public Health Observatory) to inform evidence‑based interventions.
  • Conduct child protection health assessments and report findings to the School Nurse.
  • Coordinate with health‑care professionals, parents and schools to meet children’s health needs within schools.
  • Support transitions from primary to secondary school, reviewing health questionnaires and escalating concerns to the School Nurse.
  • Initiate referrals to child‑service agencies when a child or young person is at risk; prepare written reports, participate in case conferences and core groups.
  • Act on intelligence or surveillance from sources such as A&E forms or domestic abuse referrals.
  • Maintain core standards for School Nursing, ensuring consistent, evidence‑based practice.
  • Promote childhood immunisation programmes and vision testing opportunities.
  • Keep contemporaneous records in line with Trust and NMC guidelines.
Person Specification Qualifications
  • Must hold the qualification of RGN/RSCN Adult/Child Nurse and be registered on the NMC.
  • Willingness to undertake further training, including specialist practitioner courses.
  • Completion of a Leadership Course and ability to demonstrate leadership skills.
Experience
  • Minimum 12 months of post‑registration experience.
  • Experience working with children, young people and/or families.
  • Experience working effectively in teams.
  • Knowledge of key performance indicators and their impact on service delivery.
Skills
  • Ability to collaborate with children, young people, families and professionals.
  • Understanding of LSCP Child Protection policies and procedures.
  • Support for team development and skill application.
  • Knowledge of the public health role in school nursing.
  • Basic IT skills (Microsoft Office/Word) and basic social media skills.
  • Prioritisation of delegated work.
  • Knowledge of confidentiality requirements and clinical supervision.
