We are seeking highly motivated and passionate Senior Charge Nurse to join our Medical Assessment Unit (MAU) at The Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley.

The MAU is a fast‑paced, dynamic environment that provides assessment and immediate care for patients referred in through GP services with acute medical needs. This busy and dynamic unit receives a high turnover of patients that require first assessment after being referred in from primary care, Via our Flow Navigation Centre. The role of the Senior Charge Nurse in MAU is to provide clinical leadership to manage the assessment of acutely unwell patients, oversee unit flow, and line‑manage nursing staff ensuring the delivery of high‑quality patient care.

Monitoring infection control standards, managing clinical incidents and maintaining high standards of record keeping in line with NMC and GGC NHS policies and procedures.

You will also play a key role in quality improvement and transformation work across the medical receiving floor (AMU / MAU / Ambulatory care), working closely with the ED team, consultant body, ANP’s and management team.

As an assessment unit for a broad range of conditions, the MAU provides outstanding opportunities to develop both general and specialist skills as a Senior Charge Nurse. All other roles will be assessed for sponsorship eligibility in line with current Home Office requirements. NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) can only issue a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) where these are met.

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:
  • Location based in Royal Alexandra Hospital
  • Permanent Contract
  • Full‑time position (36 hours per week)
  • Shift pattern for this post are fully flexible
Key responsibilities:
  • Provide clinical leadership, developing innovative ideas to improve effectiveness and efficiency of care and collaboratively setting and measuring standards of care delivery.
  • To develop expert practice in all pertinent areas of ward/department nursing.
  • Facilitate the management of change within the ward/dept whether clinical or managerial in nature ensuring that the ward team foster innovative practice and meet patient needs.
  • Supervise, deploy and develop all staff to ensure efficient management within the Specialty/ward/department
  • Assesses, develops, implements and evaluates programmes of care according to the level of need that the patient requires ensuring that efficient and effective care is administered.
  • Ensure that all written documentation within the ward area is clear, concise, timely and complies with the NMC Standards for Records and Record Keeping
  • Proactively manage resources to ensure efficient and effective use of such within the area of responsibility and is responsible for the procurement of non stock items and supplies pertinent to area.
  • Takes a lead role in the recruitment and selection of staff. Ensure that complaints are investigated timeously and subsequent action plans are implemented, making staff aware of user concerns and/or identified trends.
  • Ensure that all trained nurses work within the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and Code of Practice, have access to and comply with all Organisational Policy, Protocols and Procedures.
