We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Charge Nurse in Police Custody Health Care (PCHC) who will lead and support the team in developing a new workforce model within PCHC.

As Senior Charge Nurse you will lead the nursing team to support and deliver a high standard of safe and effective evidenced based practice healthcare and forensic intervention provision to persons in police custody suites in NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde (NHSGGC) ensuring equal access to healthcare for all referred patients.

You will have clinical, professional leadership and managerial responsibility for the nursing service, on a 24-hour basis within the Police Custody healthcare service and have responsibility for clinical and staff governance issues.

You will be responsible for managing referrals, providing integrated assessment, implementation and development of care programmes for individuals detained within custody suites across NHSGG&C. In doing so you will be committed to providing a quality service and involved in continuous personal development, updating skills and knowledge, and the development of the service.

Knowledge and / or experience of delivering services with justice requirements would be advantageous, though not a requirement. Experience of service change management, quality improvement and development would be desirable. As the role is covering a peripatetic service a driving licence is required.

All other roles will be assessed for sponsorship eligibility in line with current Home Office requirements. NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) can only issue a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) where these are met.

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern

  • Permanent Contract
  • Full-time position (36 hours per week)
  • Shift pattern for this post are Monday Friday, Core Hours
Key Responsibilities
  • Act in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Council/ The Code Standards of conduct, performance and ethics of nurses and midwives to ensure the highest standard of professional conduct is maintained.
  • Demonstrate effective accountability for all clinical and professional decisions within the scope of professional nursing practice.
  • Participate in and facilitate clinical supervision and reflective practise
  • Has responsibility for timely and appropriate referral of patients to other clinical professionals and/or agencies.
  • Keep accurate and comprehensive records (paper and electronic) in accordance with NMC guidelines in line with NHSGGC policies and procedures.
  • Work in collaboration with Forensic Physicians and other health professionals to ensure referred persons are seen by the most appropriate healthcare professional to manage their presenting or emergent healthcare needs in a timely manner.
  • Engage in self-appraisal and continuous professional development
  • Identify the health needs of a referred person, or seek professional or specialist help, to provide advice and recommended treatment
  • Inform the decision making of the custody Sergeant as to the welfare and medical needs of referred persons.
  • Undertake clinical assessments of all referred persons, using agreed methods and completing appropriate records, ensuring a person-centred approach focussing on their clinical priorities.
  • Develop appropriate care plans, risk assessments and recommendations as necessary, in order to ensure that custody staff understand the healthcare needs of persons in custody.
