An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 6 Charge Nurse to join the Neurosciences/OMFS Critical Care Team within the Institute of Neurological Sciences s specialist 12-bed Critical Care Unit provides high-quality, person-centred care to critically ill patients requiring neurosurgical, neurological, and oral & maxillofacial services from across the West of Scotland. As a Charge Nurse, you will play a key leadership role in coordinating the delivery of safe and effective patient care, supporting and supervising staff, promoting clinical excellence, and contributing to service development.

Working within a highly specialised multidisciplinary environment, you will demonstrate a strong commitment to patient-centred care, professional development, and quality improvement. The role offers excellent opportunities to further develop leadership and critical care expertise through a dedicated Clinical Educator. Flexibility, effective communication, and the ability to lead and work collaboratively within a team are essential. Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:
  • This post will be based at the Institute of Neurological Sciences, Queen Elizabeth University Hospital
  • Full-time Contract (36 hours per week)
  • Permanent post
  • Shift pattern for this post are 12 hr days/nights/ weekends
Key responsibilities:
  • Responsible for the assessment of care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care for patients to ensure delivery of a high standard of care.
  • In the absence of the SCN, assume accountability for the management of daily operational responsibilities in the ward including, work allocation, deployment and supervision of staff to ensure smooth running of the ward.
  • In conjunction with the SCN sets monitors and evaluates standard of care within defined policies, procedures, standards and protocols of the ward and Division to ensure adherence to, and delivery of, a high quality service.
  • Consults with the SCN to ensure that all nursing staff are aware of, and work within, local and Division policies and procedures to ensure the safe working practices are maintained for both patients and staff.
  • Maintains effective communication with patients, relatives/carers and other members of the multidisciplinary team to ensure that appropriate information is shared and patient needs are met.
  • Leads and supervise/mentor junior staff/students who are providing care to patients and act as a source of advice to ensure their educational needs are met.
  • Undertakes teaching of registered/non-registered nursing staff, including basic and post-basic students, and participate in the implementation of staff personal development plans to facilitate ongoing development.
  • Organise own workload to ensure that the interests of patients/clients are met.
  • Responsible for maintaining patient records within agreed standards. o Maintain departmental stock levels, through ordering of stores, ensuring the economic use of all resources.
  • Develop the role by using evidence-based practice and continuously improve own knowledge following PREP guidelines.
