A Registered Nurse – Palliative Care (IPU & HBC)
About Highway HospiceHighway Hospice is a registered non‑profit organisation that has served Durban for over forty years, providing palliative and end‑of‑life care to patients with life‑limiting illness and their families. Our 24‑hour In‑Patient Unit (IPU) will offer short‑stay symptom control, respite and end‑of‑life care alongside our established Home‑based service.
The Role /Key ResponsibilitiesWe are looking for a Registered Nurse to join our In‑Patient Unit and Home‑Based Care (HBC)
Teams
- To deliver high quality comprehensive palliative care in our IPU (initially commencing with the homebased care team for a period of orientation)
- Provide psychosocial support to patients, their families and caregivers
- Develop and promote evidence‑based palliative nursing care protocols across our IPU/HBC
- Formulate, implement, and evaluate individualized care plans for patients, families and caregivers
- Maintain accurate patient records, clinical documentation and medico‑legal reports
- Demonstrate leadership skills to promote effective teamwork and caring for caregivers
- Demonstrate good communication skills, written and verbal, with staff, patients, family members and caregivers
- Effective management of resources, human, technical and financial within the IPU and Highway Hospice
- Collaborate with all members of the interdisciplinary team to deliver person centred care
- Prepared to work shifts to maintain a 24‑hour service
To be considered for this role, you must meet the following criteria:
- Qualification:
Diploma or Degree in General Nursing. - Professional Registration: Current, active registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Registered Nurse.
- Palliative Expertise: Demonstrated experience in a palliative care setting
- Experience: A minimum of 10 years of post‑qualification nursing experience (experience in oncology, ICU, or geriatrics is highly advantageous).
- Licensing: Valid South African driver’s license (with own reliable transport preferred).
- Attributes: Emotional intelligence, excellent communication skills, resilience, and an energetic, positive approach to teamwork, flexibility and adaptability
A recognized post‑graduate qualification/further education in Palliative Care

- Remuneration market‑related, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
