Campus Operations seeks a Horticulture Technician II to perform a variety of specialized landscaping functions to maintain and improve our Clayton Campus grounds, which includes the Home Office, Clayton Road, The Lodge, Clayton Bradley Academy, and The Cottage. Using horticulture expertise to ensure the care and health of a wide variety of trees, shrubbery and other planted materials, the Horticulture Specialist II is responsible for safety, productivity, and attention to detail as it relates to Clayton Groundskeeping.
HorticultureTechnician II Duties
- Performs maintenance and rotation of existing plants.
- Implementation of new plant areas as required and/or requested.
- Hand-prunes specialty shrubs, trees, and vines.
- Understands plant identification and proper pruning and techniques for a multitude of plant varieties.
- Identifies pest and diseases and selects, measures, mixes and applies appropriate chemical control agents to control weeds, common plant diseases and insects.
- Understands and applies the appropriate amount of fertilizer and water to new plantings or existing plants in distress.
- Assists with inventory and maintenance of all associated groundskeeping equipment.
- Makes recommendations on new equipment needs as well as replacement needs.
- Identifies required pesticides needed and submits request to Supervisor for approval and purchase.
- Troubleshoots irrigation system problems (wires, valves, leaks, repair damaged sprinkler heads, pumps, etc.) and makes recommendations for fixes to make systems work correctly.
- Operates mowers, vehicles, and all equipment associated with grounds and landscaping activities.
- Performs seasonal leaf and snow removal.
- Annual preventive maintenance for parking lots, painted lines, and signage.
- Designated as essential personnel and required to report to work to ensure operation of essential campus functions during emergency situations when operations have been suspended or delayed.
- Education:
High School Diploma / GED - Years of Related
Experience:
1-3 years - Licenses/Certifications:
Valid Driver’s License, Certified Irrigation Technician (preferred), Department of Agriculture Cat3 Pest Technician Certification (preferred)
- Knowledge of all facets of plant care and maintenance.
- Knowledge in application of fertilizers, insecticides and fungicides.
- Knowledge of tools used in pruning trees, shrubs and plants.
- Knowledge of operating all mowers and machinery associated with groundskeeping.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Has knowledge of basic electrical and hydraulics related to the system including voltages, amperage, valves, controllers, pumps, water flow, and pressure demands.
- Thorough knowledge of ALL irrigation controllers and programming.
- Ability to read blueprints as it pertains to irrigation.
