Recreation Assistant; Sailing Instructor – Rainbow Bay Marina

Overview

Accepting applications Open & closing dates 10/10/2025 to 10/24/2025. Salary $17.25 per hour. Pay scale & grade NF 2.

Prepares lesson plans associated with sailing instruction for beginners, intermediate and advanced students.

Teaches private one‑on‑one and group lessons with no more than 12 students per class.

Teaches basic sailing skills, rules of the road; cares and maintains sails, lines, safety equipment; defines storm signals, navigational aids and buoys.

Works under the general supervision of the Outdoor Recreation Manager. Works independently with minimal supervision under departmental and organizational guidelines, plans and policies.

Refers questionable or unusual problems to Management.

Guidelines:
Incumbent complies with prescribed procedures and follows oral and written instructions. Incumbent is able to keep up with the normal flow of work. All duties are accomplished in a thorough, accurate, and timely manner.

Complexity:
Incumbent is expected to learn, apply and comply with procedures applicable to the day‑to‑day operations of the Outdoor Recreation Program. Incumbent must know the rules of the Harbor and provide accurate information to customers/students.

Scope and Effect:
Provide accurate sailing/windsurfing instructions through individual and group lessons. Teaching individuals to respect and follow safety procedures at all times while in the water.

Personal Contacts:
Incumbent will have one‑on‑one contact with customers/students in a safe and professional outdoor setting.

Physical Demands:
Long periods of sitting and standing may be required. Pushing/pulling and manual labor required.

Resumes must include information which demonstrates experience and knowledge, skills, and ability (KSAs) as they relate to this position. Applicants are encouraged to be clear and specific when describing their experience level and KSAs. A qualified candidate must possess:

• Proficiency in sailing and windsurfing.
• Knowledge of navigational aids, water safety, lifesaving and first aid principles and practices.
• Must be able to communicate clearly and show ability to instruct.
• Must be willing to work weekends, nights and holidays.

This position does not have a positive education requirement.

Salary is dependent on experience and/or education. Executive Order 12564 requires a Federal workplace free of illegal drugs.
