OverviewOpen & closing dates: 12/15/2025 – 12/29/2025. Salary: $27.07 to $35.19 per hour. An additional 3% cost of living allowance (COLA) will be added to the salary above. Pay is subject to annual review and adjustment. Pay scale & grade: GS 7.

This job is open to the public, U.S. Citizens, Nationals or those who owe allegiance to the U.S. The position is being filled using the Alaska Nat'l Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA) local hiring authority (16 USC 3198). Any U.S. Citizen who has acquired special knowledge or expertise regarding the natural or cultural resources of Denali National Park and Preserve, by reason of having either lived or worked in or near the unit may apply.
To be eligible your resume must clearly show periods of time having lived or worked in or near the area of consideration (see qualifications section).
- Regularly leads extended patrols, accompanied by trained Volunteers in Parks (VIP) in high altitude mountain terrain on Denali and other areas in the Alaska Range.
- Regularly performs or directs high‑altitude technical climbing for search and rescue operations, coordinating multiple resources from numerous agencies, and coordinating helicopter and fixed‑wing aircraft, including use of medical techniques.
- Enforces park regulation by performing aerial and ground patrols in the backcountry. Winter and summer ground patrols require backpacking; travel during winter may involve skis, snow machine, or dog sled; during summer may involve pack‑raft or operating rafts.
- Operates a visitor contact station and provides general public information and interpretation of the park, offers expert advice and assistance to mountaineers entering the park from Talkeetna. Collaborates between the NPS, park concessionaires, and business use licensees.
- Provides input and feedback to supervisor regarding park operations, needs, requirements, etc., and participates in the planning of district operations.
- Responsible for gathering, compiling, and reporting mountaineering and resource management data; maintains patrol reports and drafts responses to correspondence related to mountaineering; investigates and prepares accident and incident reports.

- Must be able to operate a motor vehicle; valid driver’s license and Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record required.
- May be required to complete training and operate a four‑wheel drive vehicle.
- Must wear a uniform and comply with NPS uniform standards. Uniform allowance provided.
- May be required to work on‑call, evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime.
- May be required to travel overnight away from home up to 25 nights per month.
